I have a desktop computer with a network card, a laptop with wireless network card and a wireless router that also accepts cat5 cable.
Both of these computers are currently in my room and I want to transfer the desktop into another room but will still keep the laptop in my room.
Do I have to purchase a new wireless network card for my desktop or can I convert the current network card into a wireless by purchasing some kind of add on?

The current network card in the desktop will be usekess for that situation but you have many options to do what you want. It is only for hardwired situations.
Not neccessarily in the best order:
1: An adapter to use your laptop's wireless card if there is a built in network card in the laptop would be a pcmcia to pci (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16815104222) to put in the desktop. That is if you can tolerate the laptop being hard wired.
2:Just get a wireless card (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16833194001) for the desktop
3: Get a usb wireless Dongle (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16833338012) so you don't have to open the desktop or if there are no availavle pci slots.
You can also run a CAT5 cable to wherever the desktop is moving to. It might not even be all that hard if you are not moving it far. I did my whole house in less than a day, and I have a lot of comptuers.

Thanks guys,
I like the dongle suggestion seems the most labour free
