I recently got a new mb w/CPU as my old one stopped working. After installing the new MB/CPU my computer has started shutting down from time to time. The error msg that is automatically generated says it's a hardware problem, but funny enough it only happens when using MS programs. I can play a non-MS game all day and there is no problem, open op Explorer, or such, and the comp shuts down within a few minutes.
Trying to reinstall XP I get to the screen that ask for me to accept all their conditions, I hit F8 as requested and nothing happens. If I hit the ESC key it restarts. I tested my keyboard and the F8 key works fine.
Any idea's?
Thanks.
See if this procedure works:

Thanks, but I already replaced the MB and has accepted that I'll have to do a new install of XP. I just don't understand why it won't let me accept the conditions via the F8 key, but the ESC (Not accept) works.

I took the machine in for a diagnostic and it turned out that the fan on the video card shuts off from time to time causing the card to overheat and thus shutting down the computer. Replacing the card seems to have solved the problem. I'm not sure if this also accounts for the problems installing XP, but for now that's not an issue as the comp is working. :)

Any damages appear on the Windows Installation CD? It's possible to block you from accessing to the next page during the installation...

No the CD looks perfectly fine to me. It's an OEm cd, but I don't know if that matters.

Well...other alternative, you can use other OEM Windows Installation CD to reinstall your Windows actually. As long as you have and you use your own license number...

I do, I'd just hate to buy another XP disk when I already have one. No reason to give MS more money than what is necessary. I changed the power supply too, and will try re-installing XP again tonight as the re-starts still occur, but less frequently.

i had a similiar problem with restarts, and it turns out my video card was messed up.

I tried replacing the video card and already replaced the power supply. I fiinally got XP reinstalled (the reason why it would not reinstall was a defect keyboard. Either the tester I used sucks or I did not read the result correctly), but it still crashes. XP says it's the CPU that sees the checksum as being incorrect, or something like that, and then tells XP to shut down. I took it back to where I bought the motherboard so they can run diagnostics again.

I hope your mother board will be ok. Anyway a regular mother board won't 'lich' you lot of money, a updated mother board maybe only around RM300 - RM400 (Around 100$). So if it's really the mother board problem and as if the charge is very high to do the recovery, just let it go...To prevent the 'reactivation' of the ill mother board in the future. :(
Just throwing money at the problem and replacing parts will rarely fix things (well I guess eventually it will).
Bad checksums and stop errors often times relate to bad RAM or HD. Have you run diagnostics thoroughly on these parts?

Update:
I took the computer back to where I bought the MOBO/CPU and they ran diagnostics on it again. First they told me the fan on the video card was shutting down randomly and thus I needed a new card. I have a FX5900XT and would rather not replace it, so I took a closer look and realized I forgot to plug in the power supply to the. Embarrasing yes, but it should be more embarrasing for the guy in the service dept. although he did not seem to realize this. I took the computer back again and they ran tests on it for 11 days then told me my XP version was bad, because they did not encounter any problems running diagnostics or DOS.
After much debating and a little yelling I finally convinced them to install one of their version of XP. Well, I got a call back the next day and was told that after digging a little deeper they determined that my MOBO was bad. They replaced the MOBO, and so far the computer is running fine.
The store where I bought the MOBO and had diagnostics? Fry's Electronics. I'd not recomend their service dept. to anyone.
