just a question. we have a portable dvd player set to region 1 code.
Will dvd disks coded with region 0 work with this? Im planning of sending this to the philippines and is hoping there are some region 0 disks there.

Technically there is no such thing as a region zero disc or a region zero player. There is such thing as an all-region disc. There are also all-region players. Some players can be "hacked" using special command sequences from the remote control to switch regions or play all regions. Some players can be physically modified ("chipped") to play discs regardless of the regional codes on the disc. This usually voids the warranty, but is not illegal in most countries (since the only thing that requires player manufacturers to region-code their players is the CSS license; see 1.11). Many retailers, especially outside North America, sell players that have already been modified for multiple regions, or in some cases they simply provide instructions on how to access the "secret" region change features already built into the player. As an interesting side note, on Feb. 7, 2001, NASA sent two multiregion DVD players to the International Space Station.
Extensive information about modifying players and buying region-free players can be found on the Internet (see 6.4.2).
In addition to region codes, there are also differences in discs for NTSC and PAL TV systems (see 1.19).

so we are risking an $80 dvd player by sending it to the Philippines?
BTW it's an Insignia NS-7PDVDA. Any recommendations?

Thread has been moved into Multi-media. The After Hours Forum is not for conversations related to troubleshooting computer problems...

We're talking about region codes on a portable DVD player. You know, one of these things:

I guess it could be called a computer of sorts...
Anyway, if the discs are region-free, they'll play on any dvd player regardless of the region - as long as both the disc and player are NTSC or both are PAL. The DVD player you have, however, will not play Region 3 discs, which is what is official in the Philippines. And I'm pretty sure NTSC is the format used in the Philippines, just like here in the states.

Tired of tech talk? Gather 'round the fire and socialize with your fellow geeks. No difficult techie questions here, or else! ;) I guess since it's Rio who started the thread I could have cut him some slack... ;)

:D :D :D
I didn't expected this to be a technical issue. I was just trying to take opinions wether I should send this player to the Philippines or not

I do not know if the following will be of any use to you. It instructs you on how to change the region code setting for some DVD players etc. I have in the past followed their instructions with player attched to TV without problems. If in doubt do nowt or contact them for further information. Iaccept no responsibillity if you decide to go this route.

cool. thanks. I believe using this is better than "mod-ing" the hardware itself.
