I recently had a HD crash on windows XP after loading the SP2 update. The load up page would just keep looping. Finally got F8 button to work but could not start in safe mode or from last know good config. Booted using the CD and then did the repair and finally got system to boot. Now the problem is, after the windows boot screen and then the select user screen it is asking for a password. I did not set a password during set up. How do I get around this? Thanks

Have you tried just clicking onto the user icon? If no password set tehn this should allow you proceed to windows

Yes, I click on my icon or the administator icon that is suddenly showing up and both request a password. I can not by-pass it either.

Thanks very much for the reply. What I finally did to correct the problem was to format the C drive again using the Windows XP disc. This time everything went fine and no more passwords are requested!!!! Fortunately the HD was a fairly new install so not much was on it to be lost.

Glad to hear it.

If I could make a suggestion to you. If you have only one HDD then partition it. Use this second drive\partition as a storage drive\partion and place all important documents onto this partition as well as e-mals etc.

Then after installing all the programs and settings you require make an image backup of the C:\ drive (partition) using a drive imaging program like Ghost - BiNG ( http://www.iol.ie/~krakowangus/bing.htm ) or something similar. By doing this if the above or similar happens again all you would lose is any software installed after image is made.
