Windows Media player isn't exactly the best for in-depth disc making.
I can tell you for sure that Nero can do that with no problems.
The 2 second gap between songs does a lot more good than bad.
In my opinion anyway a song starting the instant one ends wouldn't be the best for listening quality.Aswell as the fact that it would probably scare the crap out of you.
There are plenty of Nero trials you can download.
Just use one to burn the disc the way you want to.
For WMP...I don't think it can be done. It is a setting that I've never seen available for changing in WMP.
Like Laguna said, Nero or any other full featured, dedicated burning app can do it easily.

Tracks without silence in between are appropriate in specific situations. Most of my cds have the gaps between tracks removed because they're mostly live continuous mixes of friends. These DJs blend the records into one another and don't stop in between, so there is no audible gap. If I burn them as one long continual track, it's really difficult to jump between sections of the mix. I instead break them into tracks at approximately where the most audible portion of the music becomes the next record.
I use Nero to burn mine, and I will probably always use Nero for this. If you don't want to pay $70 for the software, a fully licensed version is often included with retail boxed burners, both internal and external. Almost always for less than the software itself, with a new burner included.
