hi :o i have a packard bell imedia 5090 with 256mb ddr memory, over last few days, comp began runnin slower than norm, freezing on one occassion, started showed packard bell opening page, than i got the warning beeps,3 in total which according to american megatrends,is ram failure, then i got a message from msn, telling me it could be momery failing, and asking me to down load a test program, but since then it has been ok touch wood, would someone give me guidance or confirm memory at fault cheers ken
http://support.packardbell.com/global/item/?m=home&pn=p480411101
then i got a message from msn, telling me it could be momery failing, and asking me to down load a test program,
MSN is not a diagnostic program...it is a messanger program and as such it has no way of knowing if you are having a problem with anything. So, not only would I be a little leery of any messages saying so, I'd start looking for any malware infestations.
Start by updating and running full scans of whichever antivirus program you have currently installed.
Then download and run HiJackThis (http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/programs.php) (Place it in its own folder and run it. Choose the option to save the log, it will open the log in notepad. Copy and paste the log here...)

I found this "Windows Memory Diagnostic" bootable floppy disk easy to make and easy to use.
1. Downloaded the mtinst.exe file.
2. Ran it with a formatted floppy disk in the drive, and the program wrote a WINDIAG file to the floppy [no extension].
3. Restarted my PC with that floppy in place and the "Windows Memory Diagnostic" program ran automatically and began testing my PC's RAM.
4. Let it run for 1 hour, by which time it had completed 4 tests [almost 5], all successfully.
5. Hit the keyboard X [eXit] to terminate the test and my PC rebooted to the HDD [I'd taken the floppy out of the drive].

hi have done the memory diagnostics check and in both modes it passed?,but a picture has been forming over last few days, lots of errors, nero backup had to shut down, last night it would not close down due to rundll32,would not go into screensaver/desktop icon, kept, the real problem seems to be on start up,first thing in morning,if i get past that,it works ok if a bit slow at times, any ideas would be gratefully accepted cheers ken
A HJT log would still be in order...

There is no obvious malware I can see in your log. What I do see is you have Norton and MS One Care running on the same PC. Two things that do the same thing may conflict.....
Budfred

You know, it really would be helpful if you say why you think you have a problem... It helps to figure out what is going on... It looks like you cut off the last entry on each of the two posts...
Open a HJT scan and put checks by:
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://uk.red.clientapps.yahoo.com/c...o/bt_side.html
R3 - URLSearchHook: Yahoo! Toolbar - {EF99BD32-C1FB-11D2-892F-0090271D4F88} - (no file)
O16 - DPF: {1D4DB7D2-6EC9-47A3-BD87-1E41684E07BB} - http://ak.exe.imgfarm.com/images/noc...up1.0.0.15.cab
Close all open windows except HJT and press Fix checked...
Reboot and post a fresh HJT log with a detailed description of any problem you are having...
Edit: I see that you posted this log previously and have already received feedback from classicsoftware... Please don't post in 2 different threads... I will move this one to the correct forum anyway... It will be in Applications and Security...

Quote from pchell (http://www.pchell.com/support/smileycentral.shtml) site (removal instructions in link):
What is Smiley Central?... Although none of these products claim to be spyware, they do slow your computer down. All of the products use cookies to track usage, although they claim not to use cookies or anything else to track personally identifiable information. That being said, I would still recommend uninstalling the SmileyCentral software and other Fun Web Products if you feel your computer runs better without them.
Other entries (btw some are trojans) that can slow down your pc I suggest you remove with HJT if you can stand to live without them are:
O16 - DPF: {AF2E62B6-F9E1-4D4F-A10A-9DC8E6DCBCC0} (VideoEgg ActiveX Loader) - http://update.videoegg.com/Install/W...gPublisher.exe
O16 - DPF: {C80B7FF6-CE60-4079-935E-520C045C30A6} - http://www.mailskinner.com/binaries/msaxsetup.cab
If you don't know what this is, you should probably fix this one too:
O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{8751126B-9575-45E8-9A6B-B30A51DB36F6}: NameServer = 194.72.0.98 194.74.65.68
Run HJT again and place a check in the box in front of the entries I've pointed out to you and then select 'fix checked' with HJT which will remove them from your system.

Because of the trojans and one possible rootkit in your HJT log in your other thread, this should be moved and dealt with there.
Other thread here (http://www.pcguide.com/vb/showthread.php?t=50069)
AAMOF, this one AND your other should get relocated by a mod to Applications and Security as neither are in the appropriate forum at the moment.

I merged all 3 threads and moved them to Applications and Security... Please stay in this thread until the issue is resolved...
If you don't know what this is, you should probably fix this one too:
O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{8751126B-9575-45E8-9A6B-B30A51DB36F6}: NameServer = 194.72.0.98 194.74.65.68
These are typically the ISP and fixing them can actually cause problems with connecting, so it is not a good idea to do so...
You log is looking okay now... Run a couple more tools to see if there are lurking problems...
* Click here (http://support.f-secure.com/enu/home/ols3.shtml) to use the F-Secure Online Scanner
It's explained there with images how to allow the ActiveX to start the scan, so read that first.
Then click the F-Secure Online Scanner Next Generation Beta link.
Once the ActiveX is installed, you should accept the License terms by clicking OK below to start the scan.
Click the Full System Scan button.
It will start to download scanner components and databases. This can take a while.
The main scan will start.
Once the scan finished scanning, click the Automatic cleaning (recommended) button
It could be possible that your firewall gives an alert - allow it, because that's a connection you establish to submit infected files to F-Secure.
The cleaning can take a while, so please be patient.
Then click the Show report button and copy and paste what's present under results in your next reply.
and then.... It would be a good idea to clear out your cookies in Internet Explorer before running the Ewido scan... If you don't know how to do this, just run it and edit out all of the references to cookies when you post the log...
Please download, install, and update Ewido anti-spyware (http://www.ewido.net/en/download/)
Load Ewido and then click the Update tab at the top. Under Manual Update click Start update.
After the update finishes (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")
Close ewido. Do not run it yet.
Please reboot your computer into Safe Mode. To boot into Safe Mode, please restart your computer. Tap F8 before Windows loads. Select Safe Mode on the screen that appears.
In Safe Mode, load Ewido and click on the Scanner tab at the top. Click the "Settings" tab and then change the recommended action to Quarantine and click Automatically generate report after every scan. Click back to the "Scan" tab and then click on Complete System Scan. This scan can take quite a while to run, so be prepared.
Ewido will list any infections found on the left hand side. When the scan has finished, it will automatically set the recommended action. Click the Apply all actions button. Ewido will display "All actions have been applied" on the right hand side.
Click on "Save Report", then "Save Report As". This will create a text file. Make sure you know where to find this file again (like on the Desktop).
Restart back into Normal Mode.
Please perform another scan with Hijack This, and then post back with a copy of the Ewido log and the new HijackThis log.

Delete your Temporary Internet Files (TIF's) and the 'Cookies' (especially the tracking type) should be eliminated. Then try the online scan again.
The thing about deleting non-tracking cookies is you may lose stored info such as login usernames and passwords for forums such as here at PCG. As long as you can remember them, there's no prob. If not, use Cookies Manager (http://www.snapfiles.com/get/cookieman.html) a favorite of our one time member Kay, God rest her Soul.

Since it is hard to say why it is crashing, it is hard to say what might cause further problems... If your hard drive is failing, doing anything before making backups is not a good idea... If it is a software problem, it would be good to try the "last known good configuration" and see if that works....
