View Full Version : Why doesn't Microsoft do something about CD-ROM access problems in XP?

I am so frustrated by this.

The problem has been covered before, but just to recap: This problem is extremely common in Windows XP, in that you take a CD out, put a completely new one in, and Windows presents you with a tree of the previous CD's contents - but not the one you just put in - if you try to access anything, naturally enough, you get fatal errors, as those files and that disc are no longer in the drive...

It makes me so mad, I can't tell you...

MS know of this problem, but seem to be doing nothing about it.

With all the daily updates possible via Automatic Updates, you would think they would have addressed this major access problem by now...

I prey to the God of technology, that Vista does not suffer from this issue(but I would not be surprised to find that it does...)

Anyway, for now, I have resorted to accessing the disc on a Win98 box, which reads the disc just fine - go figure.

I don't wish to bleet, but why the hell has this problem not been fixed via an Automatic Update by now??!?!??!??!

Why, why why!?!?!??!!

Yes you would think so. The appeard to have fixed it in SP2 but that is not the case: eg http://bitrazor.com/content/misc/cdromflush.php

Thanks for that link Paul. I have printed it out. It is still annoying that you should have to delve so deep into the OS, to get it to see the new disc contents, eh?

*sigh*

After reading that Link.
All I can say is Screw that idea.
All that just to chnage a cd or dvd..
NO WAY

For some reason my system doesn't require it.
But if it did
That drive/problem would be out the window in a matter of seconds.

That drive/problem would be out the window in a matter of seconds. But how does that solve a problem that MS has acknowledged exists? Switch OSes maybe.

If refreshing explorer or changing the view options of explorer dont work it would appear that one is stymied if running SP2, which was supposed to fix these problems.

Out of interest what happens if you simply paste the CD's drive letter eg X: into the address bar of Internet Explorer rather than Windows Explorer/My Computer?

If I paste any drive letter into Iexplorer
It pops open and shows the normal content in Icon format

The ONLY way M$ will fix this bug.
Is IF the Office and IT people Call and raise Hell

P-ons like us don't count..

In Fact the same problem has been around for a very long time in some systems
All the way back to windoz 3.11 as I recall.
The cure back then was easy
"Delete c:\windows\*.*/s" :)
