What is your brand preference for a basic EIDE hard drive. Seems like I had heard Seagate was crap.

All the big names are just fine and all the big names can have a drive that fails straight from the factory.

I recommend WD EIDE Drives (http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.asp?driveid=115&language=en) simply because they come with a five-year warranty.

Would also say to use SATA in preference to EIDE if your system supports it.

I prefer Seagate myself. They were the first ones to offer a 5 years warranty. Long before WD and Maxtor. Although I do like Western Digital very much as well.

But as PrntRhd said all the big names are good these days. I would have no problem buying any one of the big names.

I just picked up an SATA 2 160GB Samsung not very long ago. It isn't as fast as the same spec Seagate I have. About 15-20% slower. But it was at as good price and I am happy with it.

More than anything it has to do with price for me. I don't have any problem admitting that I'm cheap! Personally I prefer Western Digital, but I have also had good experiences with Maxtor and Seagate (they are now one).

Why pay 30$ more for a drive that has almost identical specs, but it from a different manufacturer? 9 chances out of 10 the quality is similar, and you can usually return things within a reasonable time frame. Most drives that don't die within the first week or two won't die for years, at least that's why my experience has been.

I have received a few new drives that were dead. I'm sure that most people who deal with hard drives regularely have. The manufacturing process isn't as complicated as some other components, but hard drives can be very fragile and just one small bump during shipping can cause it to malfunction (lord knows how UPS handles their parcels ).

Actually that was Paul saying that but I do agree.
:D

IBM drives are now Hitachi, they made the infamous DeathStar (DeskStar) drives but are now on my list of good drives.
I have had good luck with Western Digital drives, I like their software and packaging.
This PC has it's original Maxtor drive and still is working fine.
