Ok, what does everyone recommend for webpage building software that won't require me to become a programmer just to create a personal webpage? Is FrontPage too much? Is there something cheaper?

Thanks!!

Frontpage? Ach! Frontpage is notorious of super-bloating the code, and making a hugh mess of things.

I prefer Macromedia Dreamweaver, but it is quite expensive. If you don't want to buy it, you can use Portable NVU (http://portableapps.com/apps/development/nvu_portable) which is quite handy. It's up to you.

HTML Kit (http://www.chami.com/html-kit/download/) and Trellian Webpage (http://www.trellian.com/webpage/index.html) are two freebies well worth trying out. Frontpage and Dreamweaver are both overkill and very expensive for someone starting out IMHO.

You can also design very simple pages with Word or Open Office. In fact all the latest apps in MSoffice can be saved as HTML - though the code is very bloated if you do go this way. MS Publisher can set up a simple site and many webhosts also provide basic software to set up simple sites.

Indeed there is nothing wrong with learning to create your pages with Notepad or any other text editor and there is much to be gained about understanding HTML if you go this route - even though you wont get functional pages set up as quickly as with other software.

Another freebie worth having a look at is Amaya (http://www.w3.org/Amaya/User/BinDist.html) and its approach is radically different from other web autoring packages.

Perfect, these are the answers I was looking for. I'd heard only of FrontPage, I knew there had to be others out there. Hooray, thanks guys! :)

And maybe these programs will give me the incentive I need to learn HTML....or not ;)

I've used FirstPage 2000 for a while...

They've recently released a new version, FirstPage 2006.

Cool, I'll try that too.

Trellian didn't work, it crashed every time I tried to open it :(

I'm using Mozilla Composer:

http://www.mozilla.org/products/mozilla1.x/

It's free, and supposed to be as easy to use as Word!

I'll use it until I've mastered Dreamweaver.
