I currently have a FIC motherboad with 2 usb ports. At current it will not support the Microsoft Sidewinder Gamepad. I would like to get another motherboard that would support this gamepad. The processor is a 550 AMD Athalon. Any ideas which motherboard would work best?

So, does Microsoft or FIC state this incompatability as a known issue?

Microsoft (http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/sidewinder/SWUpdate/GPUSB/default.asp)

I have been to the list you listed (before my post) and investigated. I found that I have a:

VIA Tech 3038 PCI to Usb Universal Host Controller

Since Microsoft sited that there may be a problem with the host controller I went to the motherboard site to get the updated drivers. After downloading the updated drivers and installing them, restarting the machine and yada yada yada, it still would not recognize the controller. I then removed everthing that was connected to the USB in the device manager list, unplugged the gamepad and then restarted the machine. One by one I put the stuff back in as it recognized it. When I first plug the gamepad in the green light on the gamepad lights up but then goes out. When I bring up the gamepad control panel it says it is not connected.

I have connected this gamepad to another machine and it works just fine. We also have a Sidewinder Joystick that came with software. so I installed it and then retried the above but still no luck. I am out of ideas other than to upgrade the motherboard. The machine is only 2 years old but still works great. I will be passing this machine onto my son since he needs a faster machine for his games and programming (Visual Basic).

Thanks for your input. I really appreciate your help. If you have any suggestions please post them.

God bless.

Oh, I guess you are out of luck.

Are you planning to use the 550 Athlon on the new motherboard? This sounds like a slot A (not socket A) CPU. Slot A motherboards are becoming hard to find, and I have no idea which ones would work with the gamepad.

Go to this site to find good prices on motherboard/cpu combinations....there is no use in buying a NEW motherboard which is that far behind the times.....go ahead and spend another $75 and get a fast Duron [AMD] or Celeron[Intel] processor on it along with all of the other stuff you get on newer motherboards.
Here is a pricing start: http://www.pricewatch.com/
