Just about every day I see the little icon down in my system tray telling me that there are updates to download. And just about always it's the Windows Defender Definition Updates. It seems like it's a little unusual that it's nearly every day. I wonder if it's something just on my end or are the rest of you who has WinXP experiencing the same thing?

Are you installing it?? If not, are you telling it not to remind you that it is there?? It is updated at least once a month, but it should stop notifying you if you tell it to or you install it...

Yes, I've been installing it every time. Here's what's funny. I just downloaded and installed it earlier this evening. I then restarted my computer and there it is again. When ever it's finished installing, I get the message that says it has been installed successfully. That's strange. Do you think I have some security setting, such as in ZoneAlarm or someplace that's preventing it from installing? But, then again, why would it say installed successfully?

I am guessing that you have a bad install... Run a HJT log and see if it shows up in there... Post it here if you are not sure...

I am not sure what the problem is from the log... Try fixing these and see if it makes a difference...

After putting checks by each of them, close all open windows except HJT and press Fix checked...

It is possible that it could be due to the clash of resident spyware protection... If the problem continues, you could turn off other resident protections and see if it makes a difference... Post back on what you find...

I think you were right about the clash of the spy ware, Bud. Fixing the HJT log didn't help. So I turned off AVG and Ad-Aware and then did the install. After I did this I got to thinking that I should have turned of one at a time to see exactly which one it was. But it was probably Ad-aware since you mentioned spy ware, not anti virus. Anyway, that fixed it. Thanks. Give your dogs an extra piece of steak or something.:) :)

Sorry I wasn't clear... I did not mean to turn off the antivirus protection and I really hope you turned it back on... If the problem returns, I would either try to uninstall and reinstall AVG or try one of the other free AV programs...

Also, I didn't see that you had AdWatch running... I was thinking more of Defender and PestPatrol running at the same time... If you didn't have AdWatch running, then the problem probably is with AVG and that leads back to my first comments above...

No problem--I turned them off only temporarily--just for the short time it took me to install. I then turned them back on immediately...
