Awesome website folks!
Thanks Rick for turning me on to it.
OK, now my question...
I need a new printer, something that will print black at least 12-15 ppm.
I'm leaning towards a HP 1200, whichs fits into my price range. But then again maybe something with a scanner bed would be nice!!
Any suggestions?
Bandit

I am a strong supporter of HP products. I don't know what you want to do with your printer, but if I needed one, this would be it. http://products.hp-at-home.com/products/detail.php?id=C6455B&j=1

We recently purchased a HP PhotoSmart 1100 at Costco for $200 (that price was lower than anything on-line for the same model). It's a "dedicated photo-printer", inkjet, that's rated at 12 ppm black and 10 color. We bought it for printing pictures for our new HP digital camera. Thus far, I am totally pleased. I am blown away at the quality of the color, texture, details (obviously, the quality of the print is a function of the input, a fact I learned as I got better using the digital camera). I have not used it much for text, tho this likely will change soon. But from what I've have printed, I would believe the 12 ppm rating, or at least very close, and the quality is high. This printer was sort of a spur-of-the-moment purchase. Costco has a great return policy, so I figured that if we did not like it, we would immediately return it, and as Costco is one block from where I work, this was a minor hassle. Then I got home and looked up the specs and reviews, and they all were very positive. It was very easy to set up, decent software, it reads your memory cards directly, you can use infrared to send pictures directly to the printer and by-pass the computer (have had no need to do that yet), and, no, I do not work for HP. But like someone else who responded, I have been very pleased with HP products over the years. I have never had a bad one. Plus, one of their specialties is printers, and I think the 1100 is pretty amazing (sometimes I still am amazed at what computers and related products can do, how far they have come over the years). Finally, it seems pretty efficient with ink. Those, too, are available at decent prices from Costco. It also has two-sided printing, which really came in handy for making Xmas cards. Regarding HP, we bought a HP 4L laser in 1994, and it is truly the energizer bunny, as we use it regularly, never had a problem (knock on wood). We have a HP scanner and the new digital camera, and all have worked with little problem. If you will be using this for pictures and are not the most demanding photo professional, you likely will be pleased. It certainly bears a look. Good luck.

I think it should be noted that the HP 1200 is a Laser Printer that is capable of out outs of 12-15 ppm in Normal print mode
Not a deskjet that only gets 12 ppm in draft,

Does anyone know of a Printer/Scanner combo that is available in that ppm and price range?

As I recall the print speed was more Important than having color capability

I just did a little checking at HP and the spec’s for the HP1100 are
Print Speed Black, Normal Quality up to 5.1 ppm http://products.hp-at-home.com/products/detail.php?id=C8639A&display_specs=full_spec&j=1

Yep Rick, you're absolutely correct re. ppm for the 1100. The 12ppm is for draft mode only. If black text is all that is desired, I'd opt for a laser.

I would be using the printer for tax returns almost exclusively.
Speed is definately my main concern. Having a the ability to make copies runs a close second!
Thanks for the input so far!

Hey Bandit,

As mentioned already, you can't go wrong with an HP printer. Personally, I wouldn't buy a combo unit, because if one thing goes wrong you lose the benefit of the other component while it's getting repaired. But, that's just me.

For my office at work, I bought a Brother HL-1240 laser printer for my own use. If it breaks down, I have a whole lot of HP's on the network. However, I've had it for a year with no problems whatsoever. Of course, they make better ones than the 1240, which I don't think is quite as fast as you want, can't remember right now. Just wanted to point out my pleasant experience with a Brother laser printer.

Edit: If you want a workhorse, stay away from inkjet printers. Yes, HP makes some good ones and yes, they are OK for occasional home use and make nice color prints, but if you want quiet, dependable and fast printing, go with a laser. Inkjets have way too many mechanical moving parts and are noisy.

Cheers,

I agree with BigBlue . You should take a look at the other options from other companies that make good laser printers .
Figuring in the work load, The cost for the unit, and The replacement cost of Ink.

I also still believe that the 1200 will work best for you.
In the case of the scanner units
I still think you should get one of the Mid price range units.
That will allow you to scan Legal document sized paper.
The 8.5x11 scanner bed (On most combo units) will only cause you problems with larger documents .

The cost and connection type will be the deciding factor for your choice .
If used for nothing But a Fax then a low resolution scanner would work.
Most fax software doesn’t support anything over 300 dpi for faxing from a scanner

If you intend to use it for scanning photos or graphics work then you should look to the higher resolution models

Hey,

The Brother HL-1240 is rated at 12PPM. It has true 600 x 600 dpi resolution. Parallel or USB. 2mb of memory. Nice machine for the price.

Cheers,

BB, I would agree regarding the dual function unit...keep 'em separate. Scanners are dirt cheap now-a-days and many come with faxing software which gives you a "twofer" (two for the price of one). http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/tongue.gif

For reliability I wouldn't go anywhere other than a Laser Printer. The HP my Father and I use in our office is an absolute workhorse...actually, it's an offbrand with HP "guts" that we use for billings. It's like the energizer bunny...keeps going and going...

We found an e-tailer where we purchase the toner carts from and I think the last 2 we purchased were around $25@ (got a better price for 2) and it was a wise choice because in the past we've run out and then run around trying to find a "local" replacement and then you might as well mortgage the farm! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/frown.gif It came with the full deal too...wiper and waste reservoir.

With the type of print volume you're apparently looking at, dealing with any type of print heads would be unwise.
