Depends...what do you plan to do with it? What kind of machine will you put it on? How fast is your databus? How fast the CPU?

Don't pay for a burner with so much speed that your CPU can't feed it data fast enough - that would be the best way to hold your costs down. Get one with "burn-proof technology" - keeps from making "coasters".

Crown711,

I have owned several (expensive to inexpensive). On the cheap end, I have a LiteOn 16x10x40x and have been quite pleased with its performance. You can find them for about $80 on the internet. If you want one with a brand name, I'd recommend TEAC.

I used to run a 4x CDR on a 400 mhz machine with a 100 mhz bus. If I tried to write faster than 2x, I could not do much of anything else without slowing the CDR down. You probably can't buy anything that slow anymore.

Plextor has a recently discontinued 8/4/32 for which their website says "some reconditioned units may be available". I did not see a price, and you sometimes "takes yer chances" on reconditioned units; but Plextor has been very reputable. Might could be pretty cost-effective. Also, if you can get to a Best Buy you will find frequent rebates & sales that are pretty cost-effective as well. HP makes some pretty good units, but tend to be a bit pricier. Also, you might try Tom's review here (http://www6.tomshardware.com/storage/01q1/010330/index.html)

had 8X in a K6II 400 worked fine. the Lite-on mentioned above will write at 8X, so you should not have to look for older hardware.

i'm still using my old HP 4/4/24 and an HP 8/4/32-both have -still, continue to work flawlessly.

burning coasters is easy to avoid if make sure not to run any other applicatins while creating a disk. And if you truely want your data to burn correctly you should burn no faster than 2-4X, no matter what speed your burner supports. Better to take a couple of extra minutes to make sure it's done right than to have to burn another one again.

I also have a Plextor-they use a metal gear setup instead of plastic like most vendors; they're very good for the money.

if you're just looking for a data burner look on Ebay some for some of the older CDR only burners ( usually around 1-4X ), they don't support CDRW-but they're great for just ripping data and music discs, and they're usually pretty cheap.

I've heard that with faster burners if you slow them down too much it's possible to distort the data 'cause the internal media will melt from the stronger laser

Hi,
I am running an AMD K6 2 500 with a cyber drive 16/12/40 and win98se.
Included was nero 5.5 software and cost £89 altogether. No problems so far.
