scanner opinions

I'm looking to pick up a scanner to archive my slides and negatives. Right now I'm leaning towards a canon d66ou as it seems to fit my needs and budget. I've read some user feedback on this unit and it seems pretty hit and miss. There seems to be a problem with dust under the glass and extremely slow scans according to some but others are saying it's the best slide/negative scanner for the money and dust isn't a problem. If you have a few minutes I'd like to hear from those who are familular with this scanner before I take the plunge.

I have never worked with the Cannon film scanner,

I did look at the spec’s for it. The fact that it is a multipurpose unit explains why the film scan is Only 1200 dpi

I work with a lot of film and slides
I have found that the 1800 dpi range works best.
