Help in removing sumsw32.exe

I've used SpyBot and Windows Defender with no success.

Found this forum and Tom Coyotes page. Downloaded Hijack and here are the contents of the log.

PS I don't how peope do it without at 3 machines, a portable and a thumbdrive. If I had only one machine (infected) I'd be going crazy. Luckily I've got all the equipment and can take this infected machine off the home network. Now all I need is hints on how to prevent my husband from continually getting these spyware and other viruses he picks up.

Anyway, thank you for all your help and here is the contents of the hijack file. Computer is still showing signs of sumsw32.exe infection. I'll also move hijack from the temporary location to a folder in programs.

1. Unzipped HJT and am now running it from the C drive folder.
2. Turned off Windows Defender runtime protection.
3. Opened HJT and put checks by all the items. Clicked on Fix checked....
4. Found and deleted all files except two.
a. C:\windows\system32\susp.exe didn't exist
b. had to delte C:\windows\system32\sumsw32.exe in the safe mode.
5. C:\program files\hijack is where I put HJT

Rebooted and still had the following signs of sumsw32.exe.

1. a dialogue box appeared with the message "run personalized settings"
2. a dos window appeared running NTVDM (sorry it appeared and disappeared so fast that I'm not sure of the spelling or the complete file that was being run)
3. A dos window appeared running runsrv32.exe.
4. Back window still had the blue screen with "Warning spyware"

Did some thinking and used HJT to find the MSMPENG.exe task which ran Windows Defender. Opened the task manager and deleted the process. Then I re-ran HJT and deleted the items listed above again. Then deleted runsrv32.exe again. Still never saw susp.exe.
Rebooted. Only thing that appeared was the background screen, named yod.htm. So I changed it.
I did see a file, dailytoolbar.dll in windows\system32.

I still need a recommendation as to a good strong spyware program. I seem to be cleaning this machine of viruses and spyware about every three months and it takes days of my time. Or should I just ban him from computer use entirely? LOL. He is already banned from using my computer while I fix his. Am letting him use the computer I use exclusively for music ripping right now.

Now on to the blinking cursor upon bootup problem, but I think I found the answer in one of your forums. Once I removed all the USB peripherals, the problem went away. So I won't have to replace the hard drive. So I'll add USB peripherals back one at a time until I find the culprit.

I would go through the HJT log process one more time...this time, logging in to the Administrator account.

Otherwise, you may have to end up cleaning every user account on the machine, individually.

Also, from the Admin account, clean out the system restore folder...it can be done by toggling SystemRestore to 'off' and rebooting, then turning it back on.

Then copy/paste this path into a Notepad file so that you can access it in Safe Mode... Boot to Safe Mode (tap F8 just before Windows starts loading and select Safe Mode)... Choose the "Delete on reboot" and "End Explorer Shell while Killing file" options... Copy/paste the entire line for the file... Once entered, click through to kill it...

Post back with how that went and the log from the Admin account... I will give you a link to an article with lots of good prevention tips as soon as we confirm this is clean...

When I fill out the Killbox dialog as you specified and click on the Red Circle X, the program counts down and then displays the following Error message.

"Pending FileRename Operations Registry Data has been removed by external Process."

I did try running Killbox again after stopping the MsMpEng process but got the same results as above.
Here is the log from the Administrator account (safe mode). I found in my research that the Administrator account doesn't appear in normal mode if you have other users other than Administrator and Guest. Both users in normal mode are Administrator's.

Just a short report as I have to go into work today to get ready for an unplanned trip.
Yesterday before I got the message about Killbox, when IE was run under Peter's account, McAffee lit up like a Christmas tree with spyware warnings about sumsw32.exe. But it seemed to clean.
I'm running another virus scan while I'm gone and then will go try spy bot again on Peter's user account. I'll post again this evening after I finish testing.:)

Virus check was clean
Spy bot ran and found about 10-12 things, fixed those. Re-ran spybot and it was finally clean.
And as a side note, the problem with the blinking cursor on re-boot was the printer, if I turn off the printer during re-booot, the blinking cursor immediately disappears. Yeah, didn't want to buy a hard drive.
