Please I am having problem installing office 2003 Package on my computer. The specs are: Windows XP Professional, Athlon XP 2500+, AS Rock Mobo, 120 GB HD, 512 MB memory.

The computer was working perfectly well until it crashed late last year. I did reformat the C drive and reinstalled the windows XP, but the office 2003 refused to install. It kept bringing up error message, that the cabinet files could not be cached to a temporary location. Each time I run the setup, a different cabinet file wouldn't cache.

Someone suggested that I use an external CD drive to try installing, assuming that my drives might be dirty. I bought a new external drive, yet it didn't work. I was also advised to run hard drive diagonistic utility to check for any damages to the hard drive. This I had done and even used the powemax diagonistic utility to completely restore the hard drive to its original status (as claimed by the manufacturers - maxtor) and then started from scratch to partition, format and install the operating system, yet, the office 2003 isn't installing.

I need help as I cannot do any work on my computer. The Office 2003 Cd isn't dirty or damaged. I have borrowed a friend's copy, yet the same problem persists.

When in the installation process does it give you the error? What version of Office 2003?

Can you quote the message directly?

The version I am trying to install is the Microsoft Office Professional Edition 2003. It brings up the error message during the setup process. The setup window shows

Installation Progess.
Current Action:
Waiting for cabinets to be cached to local Installation source.
File: M9561403.CAB.
Installation error: File not found.
A required installation file M9561403.CAB could not be found.

Original Installation source required:
If you installed Microsoft office Professional Edition 2003 from a CD, please insert your CD. If you installed Microsoft Office Professional edition 2003 over your computer network, please browse to the installation source on your network. Once you have located your installation source, click OK

Try copying the entire CD contents to the hard drive (into it's own neat folder) and run the Setup program from there.
