Building a Windows home system for a friend who wants a CD-RW and DVD. Would it be best to also include a CD-ROM as well?
I intend to also install a RAID card, so that each device is on its own channel.
My thinking is to save wear & tear on CD-RW, & DVD, but is this redundancy just overkill?
Dollars is not the priority here. Trouble free system is the most important.

Hello!
I would think that this would be overkill.
This is ONLY my opinion, of course, but if you already have a DVD drive, and a CD-RW drive, then both of these are "Backwards-compatible" with all previous CD standards, meaning that BOTH your CD-RW drive AND the DVD drive will be able to play audio-CD's, and access CD-ROMS.
Besides, you might want to add something else later, and have no room, cos all the space is filled up with CD-drives!!!

In my view, CD Roms are cheaper. I do not know about you but my CD Rom gets alot of use. Cheaper to replace CD ROM then CD WRITER OR DVD. MY views, if I run out of room just buy bigger case.

As you have not bought yet have you thought about the new(ish) combination drives out? Combined CD-RW and DVD. Some of them are getting good write-ups over here in UK. Should cost about the same, if not less, as two single drives and takes up less space. You could aslo throw in a cheap CD -Rom drive if you wanted as well for everyday use. As Andy said they are cheaper to replace if somehting goes wrong

My humble opinion is : I guess it all depends on how long your friend is going to keep the computer. Chances are he might be looking at his next new computer before these DVD and CD-RW drives break down. By that time the replacement costs would likely be very cheap. Why pay ahead for something you might not need? I tend to think it is an overkill. I guess it also depends on how much usage you have on these drives.
