View Full Version : Realtek HD
The realtek HD icon is showing up 14 times in my control panel. The sound seems to be working fine, and the board seems ok (Gigabyte Technology Co., Ltd. 8I945GMH-RH , running 3.20 gigahertz Intel Pentium 4, XP Pro, SP2)
How do I remove excess icons, if I should? Why are they there? Does this show something else wrong, as I have had a few problems with this system altho it seems to have stabilized since putting in another fan?
Thanks

My suggestion would be to head into SAFEMODE and remove the realtek drivers from Control Panel>Add/Remove...
Then, check in Device Manager and Remove all instances you find there...reboot and let Windows find.
If you want to use a furnished drivers disk, then have it ready when the found new hardware wizard comes up and select have disk...directing windows to the disk location...
I have done that: removed in Add/Remove, checked Device Manager>Sound controllers (nothing found), and rebooted.
Checked CP and no Realtek icon. Load Realtek from disc and now have one realtek icon and 16 icons with default windows symbol all linking to Realtek.
Sounds are working, (as is Skype...used to be conflicts in early Skype days)
I can live with it but worry that it is symtomatic of a bigger problem.
Thanks.

Strange Brew Indeed!
Can you effectively remove the errant icons to the Recycle Bin? Do they reappear after doing so and rebooting?

Question...is this realtek onboard or card? If card, what's the model number? Perhaps we can find some similar problems/solutions with a search.
Have you been to the Realtek website and searched through their support/FAQs? It appears they do have on-line technical support where you can "challenge" them with problems... ;)

No but I'm going there now...
I did go into C:\Windows and found similar amounts of the realtek icon, (differrent icon but still pointing to the Realtek CP) amd deleted those. The multiple ones are still in the Windows CP pointing to the Realtek CP, and the links work
which is, ahem, spooky?
I also have done a regedit clearout and reinstall of Realtek. Sticky little chum huh?
I'll post when I've heard from realtek.
Thanks.
Good Ole Realtek.

Try this...
1. Install TweakUI from HERE (http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx).
2. Once installed, run it and click on the "Control Panel" tab.
3. You will probably see there all the duplicate entries for the Realtek HDD.
Untick all but one of those [if you only want one displayed in the Control Panel].
If you can then find where those unticked settings are put in the registry you could delete them; I'm searching my registry at the moment to see where my unticked settings have been put.

Found them at "HKCU\Control Panel\don't load".
Settings as shown below...

Also at "HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Control Panel\don't load".
Found it in "Control Panel\don't load" below one other user key so far.
Search completed.
