Just wondering, there are different free anti-virus software out there. Is there a difference and a preference as to which is recommended for different vintage windows?

XP
2000
ME
98SE

Thanks.

I haven't looked at most of them in a while, but most of them should run on any of those versions of Windows. I have used AVG for a very long time...

Thanks for the reply.

I use AVG on a WINME machine and haven't had problems, although I am yet to see it catch and virus. I guess (hope) we have good surfing practices in the family. I am cleaning up and putting in an enthernet card for a friend's kid machine. It has WIN98SE on it and I wanted to install an AV on it (as well as ZA) before going for the updates. I guess I'll go with AVG on this machine also.

I just installed AVG on WinXP and WinME machines this week and it went smoothly on both... For Win98 I suggest using Kerio rather than ZA since it is less resource intensive... Use the Simple mode so that it runs mostly automatically... You will need to use an old version since the new version won't run on Win98... FileHippo has old copies...

Thanks for that tip, since I am upgrading this old PC with an instruction of spending zero dollars. It has 4GB hard drive and a small foot print of anything installed is welcome. I am digging into my boxes of scrap components:(

I use Avast, and have been very happy with it.
