hello all,

i bought mcafee internet security suite 2005 but know i am not able to update anymore. when i try it asks me to upgrade online but i have to pay. is there a way which i can just use the old program and update the virus definitions, or is this how all virus retail software is now--you can only use the program for 1 year and then you have to buy a new one.

This is depending on how long the duration of the license subscription.

For your problem it could be outdated of license subscription. Either you uninstall it, or you can choose other anti virus. Most of our cummunity members prefer to use freeware of anti virus such as Avast and AVG.Why don't yoou try that?

funkvibe,

McAfee uses a subscription business model where you buy the program and after the introductory period (up to one year) you then buy renewals (usually one year) to continue to obtain updates to program modules and antivirus definitions. At some point (usually after 2 yearly renewals) McAfee no longer offers renewals for the older version and you have to buy a new program once again.
As posted, there are other AV programs out there that have less overhead in terms of memory usage on the PC and cost less. Both the AVG and the AVAST programs work and are free for personal use, and have paid versions for business use.
The all in one "suite" programs are usually pay programs.
