Im buying a PC for Games and Graphics usage

It will have a

64 Mb Geforce 2 TV out for video and
256 Rambus for memory.

Which will work better:
a Pentium4 1.5 with a INTEL d850 MotherBoard
or
a AMD Athlon 1.4 with ASUS P4B for MotherBoard >>?????

Welcome to the forums, Bileu.

Arguments could be made either way, but most "computer geeks" would tell you the AMD at 1.4 out performs the P4 at 1.5. Either way, you're going to get the most "bang for your buck" from AMD, IMHO.

And there's very strong and compelling (http://www6.tomshardware.com/mainboard/00q2/000403/) arguments that Rambus memory just isn't worth the money. In certain tests, it's out performed by SDRAM.

My suggestion: AMD & DDRAM.

Hey,

RDRAM (Rambus) will only work with the i850 chipset, which I assume, will only work with an Intel processor.

I currently have a P4 1.7GHz 400Mhz on an Asus P4T with the i850 chipset and 256mb of RDRAM. While it's plenty fast for my business needs, I really don't know how it would stack up to heavy game play. (The boss would probably disapprove)

There is talk of improving the RDRAM in the near future along with a lower price. If you have already dished out the money for the RDRAM, I would say go for the Pentium. Besides, a damn good video card will do more for games than the processor any day. IMHO.

With the P4, there is also the advantage of superior thermal capacity. The P4 will keep on ticking when the heatsink is either taken completely off, or the fan dies, whereas the AMD will fry in a matter of seconds.

Cheers,

Big Blue 66

Thnx for your replies, guys.

So an Athlon 1.4, with 256 DIMM, on a ASUS P4B, with a 64 video card
would do the same job of a P4 1.5, on a Intel 850, with a better price, isnt it?

But, concerning compatibility and future upgrades and repairs on the hardware, is the Athlon and the P4T still the champs

PS. The stuff about temperature is quite relevant, since its almost hot as Hell here, in the summer...

They are coming out with 333MHz DDRSDRAM and there are motherboards on the market that support it Asus (http://www.tomshardware.com/technews/technews-20011120.html) and Iwill (http://www.vr-zone.com/reviews/IWill/XP333-R/) both make them and Kingmax (http://www.extremetech.com/article/0,3396,apn%253D5%2526s%253D1005%2526a%253D17790%25 26app%253D3%2526ap%253D4,00.asp) makes RAM for them. The Asus board is for the P4 socket 478 and the Iwill board is for the AMD socket A(462)

AMD all the way!!! Although Intel is releasing a new chipset for their latest and greatest 2.2GHz cpu, AMD's 1600XP cpu still benchmarks really close to them. For the price and the popularity, I'd say AMD is the winner. When it comes to rambus memory, that's already obsolete. Most motherboards are leaning towards the DDR. Rambus memory flopped 5 months after it was released as the new technology because it was strictly propriotory to Intel. Kind of like upgrading those Sony Viao boxes. Only sony stuff can go in there.
