bought amd atholon xp 1700+ processor and 1st mainboard ad11 mobo. jumpers seem to be set right-by the power connector it started to smoke unplugged ckecked settings again don't know what might be wrong any helpful ideas
Ok we need to back up a little and go over exactly what you did and in what order it was done....
What exactly was connected to the board at the time this happened?
Was the board connected to the case?
Did you follow through the manual for setting up this board?
Was there a heatsink and fan on th processor?
Some specs on the rest of the setup would also be helpful...but at this point it is looking like a toasted motherboard, minimum...

the board was in case with pwr connector, heatsink on the cpu with some xtra grease to ensure contact. all power connectors to the case(speaker, pwr on, reset etc were connected. memory installed floppy hooked up. there were only a few jumpers set to auto detect for frequency etc..after cooled down pwrd on again no distinctive smell or sight.trying to decide to try again or not only ran 1-2 min at a time.

Sorry aaron if it was smokin , then chances are the processer is blown. If it booted up at first and then locked up during boot up. Its definately blown. Try this link out to help you out a little bit more. http://www.pcguide.com/ubb/Forum8/HTML/000386.html

Hi Aaron,
OK, just so I'm sure what you are saying, you are shutting the machine down due to the smoke or concern that damage is happening, not that it is shutting down or locking up on its own. YES?
You said that smoke came from right by the power connector. How close is that to the CPU? In your second post you said all was assembled but mentioned extra grease on the CPU to ensure contact.
It does not take very much for that stuff to do its job. More IS NOT better! The CPU you have gets pretty hot pretty fast. Could it have been the extra grease burning off?
I do not want to tell you to do something that will ruin your components, but, unless you turn this machine on and can determine if any damage is done, it is of no use to you.
Good luck and let us know http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/cool.gif

Thermal compound (grease) only applied to the chip-die
itself. And a thin layer at that. Do not apply
this compound any where else on the processor. Short out
any of the bridges on the processor and you have problems.
Yes, it will smoke and smell if it gets next to anything
that is hot. I can always smell it when I first fire up a
new build.
Hopefully if your Heatsink had a thermal pad on the bottom
of it you removed this prior to using Thermal Compound. Use
either/or not both.
My suggestion is to dis-assemble this unit... use Q-tips and
rubbing alcohol and carefully clean all the Thermal
Compound off of everything and start over again.
Luck.
