I would go MSI , but what is northwood?
Also go AMD XP processers, there the best in benchmark tests against the pentiums.

Northwood is the new higher pin count, smaller die process P4....

I think at this time you should go with the Athalon XP, and a DDR chipset. The P4 isn't designed for performance with today's programs. It leans toward streaming video, and audio processing. Maybe in the future it will come into it's own when (if) programers take advantage. The A&M266 Asus board you mentioned is A7M266, and is for the AMD.

Well boss

I reckon the VIA KT266A is the best chipset around for the Athlon XP at the moment. And ive heard soltek's sl-75 DRV2 is a good board, it uses the VIA chipset.

The only other thing i'd like to mention is a problem with AMD's restraint mechanism for the heatsink and fan which might be an issue if you're using a tower case. The plastic braces can give way under the weight of the heatsink and if the heatsink falls off you're processor will be fried in less than a second as AMD dont have any temperature monitoring to speak of yet. They have instructed mobo manufacturers to add an extra feature to all their motherboards which will cut power if the processor temp. goes above 80DegC, but this wont work its way into mobos for a little while.
This might sound overly dramatic but it has happened and does happen.
It might be worth you're while waiting a little while longer until the issue is resolved.

Maybe I should start a new thread for "maximum" visibility on this question of AMD-thermal self-destruction.

Has ANYONE seen any new motherboards which feature the AMD-suggested thermal protection system for Durons/Athlons?

Hello xlidric,

The SiS 735 chip for socket A (Athlon XP) motherboards has performed better than motherboards with KT266A chipsets in at least two reviews that I have seen. (See tomshardware.com) There are currently four mobos on the market wiiith the SiS735 chip Chaintec 7SID, ECS K7S5A, Leadeck 7350KDA, and Shuttle AS25. All support (pc 2100) 266 DDR-RAM. In addition ECS has a new mobo the K7S6A with a new SiS 745 chipset that supports (pc 2400) 333 DDR-RAM but I have not seen a review or pricing.
