Hi! I'm new to these forums. I'm having a problem with my sound so I thought I'd come here to try for some help.

Here's the thing. My computer is a custom basically built from various components. Anyways, I had it put together about a year ago and it worked fine until about a month or two ago when while playing a game, the whole system just shut down. Everything. I tried plugging it into different outlets and got nothing. So me and my cousin assumed the power supply died. My cousin went ahead and got me a new case and power supply and just took everything from the other computer and put it in its new casing. Now, it works like it did before, only the sound doesn't work. Me and my mom (who works at HP) opened it up and saw nothing disconnected or misplaced. I am currently using 2-Channel speakers hooked into the green line out connector. It detects it as a power speaker.

Here's a few things it says in the General section of the AC97 Audio Configuration...

Audio Driver Version: 5.10.0.6170
DirectX Version: DirectX 9.0c
Audio Controller: VIA(3059)
AC97 Codec: ALC655

I don't know much about computers, so I'm just trying to throw some information in and give more as people try to help me. I don't know what's up. The speakers are making a sputtering sound like a cheap machine gun sound or a helicopter propeller. We've tried some headphones in the same jack and it still does it. I don't know what to do now. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

Is that faulty driver issue? Did you check the driver of the sound in Device Manager?

The only thing with driver in the name is Legacy Audio Driver under Sound, video and game controllers.

General Tab
Device type: Sound, video and game controllers
Manufacturer: Standard System devices
Location: Unknown

Properties Tab
No multimedia devices are listed at all

Details Tab
Legacy Audio Drivers
Device Instance Id (in a pull-down box)
ROOT\MEDIA\MS_MMDRV

All that is with the Legacy Audio Driver. It says the device is working properly and is enabled. Dunno what to do.

I would suggest booting into SAFEMODE and heading to Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel. Look for any audio drivers that might be there and remove. Then, head to Device Manager and look under Sound/Video/Game Controllers and remove everything having to do with Audio. If you find multiple instances of a device, be sure to remove all...we don't know which one Windows would be trying to use...then,

Reboot and when Windows finds the Audio click on "have disk" and use the supplied motherboard drivers for the audio codec...

Thanks, I'll try that. The disc to my motherboard is at Wes' so I may have to go get it this weekend. I'll let you guys know what happens when I do it.

Please do let us know...if it works or doesn't (we can do follow-ups)...
