Help???
If you believe that one, I have some oceanfront property for sale you should buy from me in Arizona!

Gateway pc 933 PentiumIII
348? megs pc-133RAM
Windows XP SP2

I am trying to rid a relative's daughter's pc of the usual junk. Viruse's and spywares etc,,, the most problematic issue I have run across is being able to update Spybot S&D and AVG besides a slower than should be performance. The root of the problem seems to be coming from the Verizon package that was installed when they purchased a broadband account that came with a modem and software.

I have run Gmer, HJT, Ewido, Dr Web, Silent runners and Rootkit Revealer. Also AVG, AdAware and Spybot with outdated definitions. Also did some online scans that took f-o-r-e-v-e-r such as Trend Micro's. As clean as it now seems, I still cannot update virus definitions nor Spybot.

Currently internet access is with D-Link 801.11b wireless Dongle getting around 11mBps connection with my D-Link router of same.

Add/Remove Programs, regular and Safe Mode only freeze the pc but RAM and CPU usage is no more than usual and nowhere near maxing out. I have run RegSeeker more than once in both regular and Safe Mode to remove all traces of what has been removed already but still the big "V"'s services remain and freeze any program I would like to update.

Anyone here know how to nuke this 8.9meg useless program? I am going to advise them to dump Verizon whom insists one uses IE and go with my isp whom does not, and advise FireFox as their browser.

No I have not contacted Verizon on this issue as when I have had to in the past, all I was able to do was get outsourced tech support personnel who barely spoke my language and when they did, they had even less ideas to suggest than I have already tried. Google offers no progress on a removal tool either.

Thanks all

PS, at least this isn't in a Dell, then I'd really have my hands full!!

Not sure how to help rid the machine of that menace, but I do have a tidbit from my experience. From talking with various techs who came to install adsl and cable over the years, that software is mainly only needed to activate the modem. It lets the isp run some various processes of their own design.

I usually offer the tech a cold soda, chat him up for a bit to show that I recognize he's not just a laborer, and talk about things like software and network security. They can get the modem activated with a voice authorization that doesn't require the software. I've had it happen to me on 3 occasions in different residences.

If you have to wipe that machine, the necessaries of the modem are done. You should be able to perform the necessary authentication through your router. I have had to clone my PC mac address in router config once to get everything recognized though.

Thanks Pangea,

Well with the help of a supervising technician we managed to get rid of their software,,, by d-e-l-e-t-i-n-g it! We tried several ways to remove it (same ways I did earlier) but were unsuccessful. After deleting, a little registry sweep-up with RegSeeker, it's much better now. :p

I haven't returned the pc to the owners yet so I'm not aware if the modem will work but I suspect you are correct as it should remain programmed and ready to access their server. Will post back if it doesn't...
