View Full Version : Slot-1 SECC or FC-pga?
Hi, all! New to this forum, but looks like a good place to start. Looking at upgrading my CPU, and just digging for info. Currently have an older mb with a PIII, 450 Slot-1, SECC2 at 100 FSB. The board will support up to 800 mHz (auto-detect or 100/100 with a 8.0 multiplier without O/C). The board also supports a FC-PGA processor (one or the other, not both). Looking for anyones views on the pros and cons of either processor. Thanks.

If the processors are identical as far as amount and speed of cache, fsb speed, etc...there really shouldn't be any difference...although the fcpga should cost less since it's cheaper to produce than the cartridge type cpu...of course with the fcpga, you also have to be careful putting the heatsink/fan on...so I guess price and how comfortable you are tinkering are the real concerns...

You won't find many slot 1 processors so given the choice of slot 1 (SECC-2) or FC-PGA (socket 370) I would choose the FC-PGA. Although both are old and don't support the newer processors.

The main difference is that the FC-PGA processor would have the 256K L2 cache in the processor chip, and the slot 1 would have 512K L2 off chip, and at half processor speed. Somewhere around 600Mhz they quit making the slot 1 version. As Rond36 pointed out, the newest PIII/Celeron's will not run in the older 370 socket (chipset). So if you want an 800MHz PIII it will have to be S370, and they made 2 800's one for the 100 fsb, and one for a 133 fsb.

Hello dkm,
It would be useful to know the make & model of your motherboard. As you have been told FC-PGA processors will be less expensive, more available but may not work with your motherboard. If you'll provide make/mod I'll perhaps be able to clarify.
