I'm not sure where to post but I think an integrated ethernet adapter might qualify for core hardware. Anyhow, I have just inherited an hp Pavilion 752n from a friend. It works great so far but I cannot get the onboard LAN to work. I looked around for a controller chip on the bound and found a RTL8100B chip which, after some research, I found out to be an onboard lan controller chip. I can find the driver, but I cannot get any operating system to "see" this device. I don't even get a "?ethernet adapter" in device manager. Also, when I plug in an active ethernet cable, I cannot get the lights to light up. I think there may be a jumper somewhere to enable it, but I have tried many jumpers to no avail. Does someone here know what to do?
Attached are some pictures of the board from hp's website and a link to the owners's manual.

Make sure the onboard lan is enabled in BIOS:

If it's already enabled, or enabling it does not work, then it may be bad. It can be replaced with a PCI network card.

There doesn't seem to be any setting in the bios for onboard lan. I am pretty sure it is a jumper.

Did you check under the 'Advanced' tab, or under 'PCI or I/O Device' in BIOS?
If there's no setting in BIOS, then contact HP because none of the documentation at the HP site shows a jumper for enabling it.
If there's no jumper, then it's probably enabled by default, and it may be bad.

OEM systems don't often have a BIOS option for disabling the onboard LAN. And the chipset is new enough that I seriously doubt there's a jumper for it (there'd be a BIOS option long before a jumper). I think the onboard LAN is just dead. You'll have to install a PCI NIC.
