View Full Version : Upgrading to XP or not?

This question comes in 3 parts-I brought a joystick to play my online games, it's asking me for my WIN 98SE disc so that I can proceed with installation. I don't have it. My WIN 98SE was a copy and my friend who lent it to me took it back, so now I have an expensive controller collecting dust. First question-is there a way I can install my joystick without the disc? Second question-if not, would it be wise for me to just upgrade to XP? I was thinking of upgrading anyway but I heard horror stories in installing XP. That comes to my third question-should I buy a copy of WIN 98SE of my own instead of XP? Any ideas will help. Thanks in advance.

upgrading decision would depend on your if your system meets XP requirements.
purchasing a legit copy of win98se at any Staples or similiar computer store for $20.00.
by the way, if instructions are followed and the system meets the requirments for XP, installing it is easier than taking a nap.

that's what they are asking here in B'more for it (win98se)

XP will run with 128 sdRAM but 256 is much better.
onboard integrated sound may or may not present a problem but you have enough of a system to easily handle a real soundcard.
I suppose it depends on weather you feel like paying for XP, if the $$ isn't an issue then go for XP.

(I wouldn't pay an overly large amount of attention to the XP compatability tests, they are often incorrect, be advised that some (allot) of software and device drivers may need updating)
how do you connect to the 'net??

I would do a fresh install of XP. Make sure you have backups of everything, and all your software and drivers. Here is a place for an OEM of XP at a good price. http://www.buycheapsoftware.com/details.asp?productID=436

ok, it was at Staples here in B'more, a "Weekly Special".
This week it's winXP (http://www.blkviper.com/WinXP/winxp.htm) Home upgrade.
I would deffinetly go for XP.

Yo cantoo,
Sea69 is mistaken about 98SE price. The best on-line price is $91.00 plus shipping. (pricewatch.com) How about re-kindeling your friendship or is it out of the question?

Hobit, if you noticed Sea said; ok, it was at Staples here in B'more, a "Weekly Special".
He wasn't quoting at any time an online price.
cantoo since XP has a much larger HCL ( hardware compatability list ) than any MS operating system since W2K, odd's are good that every driver you ned is already included by default in XP; i only had to upgrade my vid card driver to the newest one after an install of XP, it recognized and installed drivers for all my peripheral's [ Audigy, Linksys net card, Printer, monitor, etc.. ] i literally had to do nothing to get it up an running. It even recognized my logitech Wingman right off the bat.
As Sea mentioned earlier you really want at least 256 MB's of fast SDRAM ( PC133 ) for XP to run decently, otherwise it'll seriously chug along.

Sob! Sea, if that special goes by again, PLEASE buy us one! We'll be only too glad to pay for your time and shipping costs. Sorry, but old stubborn people have no interest in XP. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
