Hi everyone, we have an infected computer: my cousin downloaded some simulator program for his work, and seems some nasty came in piggybaking. He ran Spysweeper and removed the thing, but every time we reboot, we get the message above mentioned: Invalid backweb application. We downloaded and ran Hijackthis and here is the log:

Your friend has a lot more trouble than BackWeb here... Please throw a few tools at this mess so that we can clean some of it out before doing it the harder way... Please start with CCleaner and be careful to NOT accept the Yahoo toolbar...

http://www.ccleaner.com/downloadbuilds.asp

Then please do this:

* Click here (http://support.f-secure.com/enu/home/ols3.shtml) to use the F-Secure Online Scanner
It's explained there with images how to allow the ActiveX to start the scan, so read that first.
Then click the F-Secure Online Scanner Next Generation Beta link.
Once the ActiveX is installed, you should accept the License terms by clicking OK below to start the scan.
Click the Full System Scan button.
It will start to download scanner components and databases. This can take a while.
The main scan will start.
Once the scan finished scanning, click the Automatic cleaning (recommended) button
It could be possible that your firewall gives an alert - allow it, because that's a connection you establish to submit infected files to F-Secure.
The cleaning can take a while, so please be patient.
Then click the Show report button and copy and paste what's present under results in your next reply.

And then do an AVG AS (Ewido) scan:

Please download, install, and update Ewido anti-spyware (http://www.ewido.net/en/download/)

Load Ewido and then click the Update tab at the top. Under Manual Update click Start update.

After the update finishes (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")

Close ewido. Do not run it yet.

Please reboot your computer into Safe Mode. To boot into Safe Mode, please restart your computer. Tap F8 before Windows loads. Select Safe Mode on the screen that appears.

In Safe Mode, load Ewido and click on the Scanner tab at the top. Click the "Settings" tab and then change the recommended action to Quarantine and click Automatically generate report after every scan. Click back to the "Scan" tab and then click on Complete System Scan. This scan can take quite a while to run, so be prepared.

Ewido will list any infections found on the left hand side. When the scan has finished, it will automatically set the recommended action. Click the Apply all actions button. Ewido will display "All actions have been applied" on the right hand side.

Click on "Save Report", then "Save Report As". This will create a text file. Make sure you know where to find this file again (like on the Desktop).

Restart back into Normal Mode.

Please perform another scan with Hijack This, and then post back with a copy of the Ewido log and the new HijackThis log.

And wrap it up with a ComboFix cleanup:

1. Download this file - combofix.exe (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/combofix.exe)
2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
3. When finished, it will produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

Post the various logs in as many posts as it takes...

Sorry Budfred, as I have to fly back to Spain today and that takes many hours, my cousin registered as Michaelde. Sorry, we should have told you. That incomplete log is what came out of our last scan with Hijackthis: I must have done something wrong (once more). Today Michaelde will scan again and sure he'll do it better. Thank you again for your help and patience.

This may be the cause of the initial problem and it is something that I would not tolerate on my PC... It is installed by HP, but it has the ability to report back to HP on your computer... It is for updates, but those are rare if they occur at all... I suggest fixing it:

O4 - Global Startup: hp center.lnk = C:\Program Files\hp center\137903\Program\BackWeb-137903.exe

Close all open windows except HJT and press Fix checked...

Use CCleaner to clean out temp folders... Be careful to refuse the Yahoo Toolbar:

http://www.ccleaner.com/downloadbuilds.asp

Find and delete:

C:\documents and settings\owner\local settings\temp\zsCYbQaaU.exe
c:\windows\system32\vgltjeme.exe
c:\windows\system32\uCQV.exe
C:\windows\system32\Rw7hcEU.exe

C:\WINDOWS\System32\wapicc.exe
C:\Program Files\hp center\137903\Shadow\ShadowBar.exe
C:\Program Files\MarketBrowser\lmt\MarketBrowser_Launch.xpy (Folder)

Use Windows Search with the Advanced option to search hidden and system files to find and delete:

lnkalsec.exe
lantrace.exe

Reboot and post a fresh HJT log with an update on how things are going...

Actually there are others that use Backweb, too...but for the most part it is for updates.

Actually there are others that use Backweb, too...but for the most part it is for updates.

The only legit one that I know of is for an antivirus... Otherwise, it seems to be for updates and to exchange information about the system... May be legit, but only if you trust those companies to have that level of access to your computer... I don't...

You are still heavily infected, mainly with PurityScan, but probably others as well... We will throw several tools at them to see if that will take them out... Meanwhile, if you go to Start, Search and "All files and folders", then select the Advanced option, you will find options to search hidden and system files... Check those and then copy/paste the files that I noted... If Search finds them, delete them... Did you seem to be able to delete the other files and folder?? The more you tell me about what is going on, the better I can help you...

Now please do this:

* Download Dr.Web CureIt to the desktop:
ftp://ftp.drweb.com/pub/drweb/cureit/drweb-cureit.exe

Doubleclick the drweb-cureit.exe file and Allow to run the express scan
This will scan the files currently running in memory and when something is found, click the yes button when it asks you if you want to cure it. This is only a short scan.
Once the short scan has finished, mark the drives that you want to scan.
Select all drives. A red dot shows which drives have been chosen.
Click the green arrow at the right, and the scan will start.
Click 'Yes to all' if it asks if you want to cure/move the file.
When the scan has finished, look if you can click next icon next to the files found: http://users.telenet.be/bluepatchy/miekiemoes/images/check.gif
If so, click it and then click the next icon right below and select Move incurable as you'll see in next image:
http://users.telenet.be/bluepatchy/miekiemoes/images/move.gif
This will move it to the %userprofile%\DoctorWeb\quarantaine-folder if it can't be cured. (this in case if we need samples)
After selecting, in the Dr.Web CureIt menu on top, click file and choose save report list
Save the report to your desktop. The report will be called DrWeb.csv
Close Dr.Web Cureit.
Reboot your computer!! Because it could be possible that files in use will be moved/deleted during reboot.
After reboot, post the contents of the log from Dr.Web you saved previously in your next reply.

And to find what might be hiding, try running an MWavScan... It will produce a log in the lower window that has the bad list and you will need to use Ctrl-C to copy it and then paste it here for review.... If the list is extremely long, you can just paste the lines that begin with the word "File" since those are the ones we need to be most concerned about...

http://www.mwti.net/products/mwav/mwav.asp

It will suggest that you buy the product to fix what it finds, but that is not necessary... Just post the bad part of the scan and we will deal with it... Do not post the part in the upper part of the window since it scans almost every file on your drive and it is VERY long...

Post the logs and a fresh HJT log with updates on how things went...

Also, I just realized that you are running HJT from a zipped file which means that backups are not saved... Please extract it to a permanent folder like C:\HJT...
