Okay, so the other day I was playing World of Warcraft on my PC. I log out of the game to play on the net and the computer just decides to restart randomly. So I power it back up...well I should say I tried too. All of my fans turn on, case lights come on, lights to keyboard and mouse...but no picture. So I try it again. Same problem. So I let it set for an hour and tried to power it back up again...all to no avail. So I crack the case open to check things out. BTW, I personally built this computer from the ground up. Anyway, I see no signs of damage or burnt componets. The first thing I tried was hooking the monitor up to another working computer. Worked fine. I put the graphics card in another working computer...works fine. I tried the RAM in the other computer...works fine. The only things I haven't been able to test is the SATA hard drive, CPU, and Mobo. Does anyone have ANY idea which of these it could be? I mean the system won't even load BIOS. It's like I have have power to the lights and fans...but nothing else. Oh yeah, I can feel the hard drive working/spinning. I know it's EXTREMELY hard to test the CPU and Mobo to see if it's good or not but if anyone has any idea or experience with my type of issue...please help me. I'm completely at a loss.

Welcome tohttp://www.pcguide.com/ubb/pcgubb.gif Forums!

How old is the computer? Motherboard battery perhaps needs help?

Check the motherboard for bulging or leaking caps: http://www.pcguide.com/vb/showthread.php?t=25482

The computer was just built in March of this year. Also, no I haven't checked the battery yet.

I just checked every cap on the board...nothing. No bulging tops or leaking of any kind. I took the battery out just now and checked it as well. It look just fine too. But I'll leave it out for awhile and try again. The more and more I think about it...I was getting random reboots for about 2 weeks leading up to all of this. So I'm leaning towards the Mobo being the root of the problem.

Similar thing happened when a friend blew out one of the rails on his PSU - the fans were getting power but there wasn't enough for the CPU. If you can, try with a PSU that you know is working.

First off thanks to everyone who helped me out on this. But I have finally found the problem...the Mobo is shot. I ended up having to take everything out of the PC and trying it in another machine. Every single piece of hardware worked without problems...except for my motherboard. I ended up recreating the same problem I am having with my PC on this other machine. Funny thing is though that the mobo shows no signs of being broken. No oxidation, bulgin' caps, burn marks, etc. The board (after being dusted completely off of course) looks as if it's a brand new board. *shruggs* But I know after 10 years of working with computers that they have a weird way of showing problems. Thanks again for everyone's help.

Final thought... Did you try the barebones boot with the motherboard outside of the case on a non-conductive surface?
