A coworker needs to burn data discs. He has a new Dell Laptop, which came with a DVDRW drive and a "DELL" version of Roxio.
It worked before just fine, but now when he goes through all the moions, it looks like it burns the disk and Roxio says it's done, but the disk has nothing on it and can't be recognized on any machine. I also do not see any evidence of data being written to the CD.
Any ideas?

It is more likely that it is the burner that is at fault. But one thing to try first is to remove the dvd burner from Device Manager, reboot, let Windows find and install the atapi drivers for it, then reinstall the burner program. You could also try a cleaner disk but I hasve no experience with their use or success rate.
If the above does not help, try a new burner.

OK, thanks. It's a new laptop, so Dell should covery any defect if it gets to that.

Try burning with the native WinXP burning software (assuming that is what is running on a new laptop) by simply dragging some files onto the DVD icon (with a blank disk in the drive) in My Computer and then RClicking the icon and choose the option to burn. If that also fails you might want to try a different make of CDR/CDRW.
Can you get the Roxio software to verify the burn and if that is successful perhaps you need to ensure you are closing the session/disk in order to be able to read the contents.
Isobuster should be able to "tunnel-through" and see if anything has actually been copied to the disk, which should also show some signs of a burned area that is not as "shiny" as the outer unburned part of the disk.
