View Full Version : Why running so slow?

I am having problems with the computer running extremely slow. As you can see by my sig, there is no reason the computer should run slow during anything, let alone basic applications. When I go into the Intel Desktop Control Center, it is showing my CPU usage around 100%, even at idle. The memory usage shows 0, all the time, even though it recognizes my memory under the system tab. As a result, everything I try to run is slow and choppy. I can't watch videos, lsiten to music, play games or anything other than basic Word or Excel files. It almost seems like it is maxing out my cpu, which shouldn't be happening. It also takes forever to boot up.
I have downloaded the latest bios and contacted Intel directly, without much luck. Any thoughts?

Make a Knoppix Linux Live CD (http://www.knoppix.org/) [on a good PC], boot from the CD to load Knoppix to see how well the system performs.
If it runs normally [no sign of being slow], then there's nothing wrong with the hardware and the problem is with your software environment.
You can then focus on the cause of the problem in the software.
Which version of Windows are you running?

Can you tell us which process is using up the CPU during idle?

Windows XP Pro, Service Pack 2. As far as which process is using it up, I have no idea. There doesn't really seem to be anything out of the ordinary in the Task Manager.

Post a HijackThis log to see if there is any obvious malware:
http://www.merijn.org/programs.php
To run HJT, extract it to a permanent folder such as one you create like C:\HJT or the Desktop. Close all open windows and
browsers and make sure that all programs are enabled if you use msconfig. Run it and Scan, then Save the log.
When the log window appears, Right click to Copy it, open your browser and come here to Paste the entire log. Do
not make any changes until it is checked since most items are either benign or essential to the computer.

The only problem I see here is a minor bit of corporate spyware... If you want to fix it, open an HJT scan and put a check by:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Alcmtr] ALCMTR.EXE
Then close all open windows except HJT and press Fix checked...
Find and delete:
C:\WINDOWS\ALCMTR.EXE
If you want to check deeper for malware, try this:
* Click here (http://support.f-secure.com/enu/home/ols3.shtml) to use the F-Secure Online Scanner
It's explained there with images how to allow the ActiveX to start the scan, so read that first.
Then click the F-Secure Online Scanner Next Generation Beta link.
Once the ActiveX is installed, you should accept the License terms by clicking OK below to start the scan.
Click the Full System Scan button.
It will start to download scanner components and databases. This can take a while.
The main scan will start.
Once the scan finished scanning, click the Automatic cleaning (recommended) button
It could be possible that your firewall gives an alert - allow it, because that's a connection you establish to submit infected files to F-Secure.
The cleaning can take a while, so please be patient.
Then click the Show report button and copy and paste what's present under results in your next reply.

It claims you have an Alcan infection so it would be a good idea to run this to make sure it is gone:
1. Please download, install, and update Ewido anti-spyware (AVG AS) (http://www.ewido.net/en/download/)
Load Ewido and then click the Update tab at the top. Under Manual Update click Start update.
After the update finishes (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")
Close Ewido. Do not run it yet.
2. Please download Brute Force Uninstaller (http://www.merijn.org/files/bfu.zip) to your desktop.
Right click the BFU folder on your desktop, and choose Extract All
Click "Next"
In the box to choose where to extract the files to, click "Browse"
Click on the + sign next to "My Computer"
Click on "Local Disk (C:) or whatever your primary drive is
Click "Make New Folder"
Type in BFU
Click "Next", and Uncheck the "Show Extracted Files" box and then click "Finish".
3. RIGHT-CLICK HERE (http://metallica.geekstogo.com/alcanshorty.bfu) and choose "Save As" (in IE it's "Save Target As") in order to download Alcan worm remover.
Save it in the same folder you made earlier (c:\BFU).
Do not do anything with these yet!
4. Please reboot your computer into Safe Mode. To boot into Safe Mode, please restart your computer. Tap F8 before Windows loads. Select Safe Mode on the screen that appears.
5. Once in Safe Mode, please go to Start > My Computer and navigate to the C:\BFU folder.
Start the Brute Force Uninstaller by doubleclicking BFU.exe
Next to the scriptline to execute field click the folder icon http://metallica.geekstogo.com/foldericon.png and select alcanshorty.bfu
Press Execute and let it do it’s job. (You ought to see a progress bar if you did this correctly.)
Wait for the complete script execution box to pop up and press OK.
Press exit to terminate the BFU program.
6. Ewido Scan
Then run Ewido and click on the Scanner tab at the top and then click on Complete System Scan. This scan can take quite a while to run, so be prepared.
Ewido will list any infections found on the left hand side. When the scan has finished, it will automatically set the recommended action. Click the Apply all actions button. Ewido will display "All actions have been applied" on the right hand side.
Click on "Save Report", then "Save Report As". This will create a text file. Make sure you know where to find this file again (like on the Desktop).
Restart back into Normal Mode.
Please perform another scan with Hijack This, and then post the contents of the Ewido text report that you saved and a new HijackThis log.

Are you still having any problems?? Your log looks okay...

Unfortunately, nothing has changed. Intel finally emailed me back and said they thought I had a virus also. Is it possible this could be a hardware or setting issue?
Again Budfred, i appreciate all of your help.

The Alcan infection is a VERY serious one and was probably a major issue... However, it claims to be gone... I suggest you run F-Secure again and see if there is still evidence of it there...

That isn't showing anything more, although apparently it found more to fix... Try this so we can get another view:
1. Download this file - combofix.exe (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/combofix.exe)
2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
3. When finished, it will produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply
Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

I ran the combofix. The log was to big to post in here, So I am going to attach a text file.

This is the only suspicious file I found and I suspect that you know what it is... If you don't, it would probably be a good idea to delete it...

I am not seeing another problem at this point, so it might be a good idea to explore the possibility of a hardware problem again... It might be worthwhile to try a Repair Install first just to make sure that Windows is not simply corrupted...

Sorry it took so long to update this, but I have been out of town. I just this past week finally resolved this problem. I was unable to even do the Repair install because I couldn't even get into the bios. However, I was looking around online some more and I read of a similar problem another person was having, but with an AMD chip and a different board. He contacted the manufacturer and they finally told him to remove the video card and reinstall it. So I tried the same thing. I took it out and put it right back in, no cleaning or reinstalling. Magically, THIS WORKED!! My computer booted up almost instantly as opposed to the 15 minutes it was taking before. The cpu usage is normal and the temp is never over 51C, even when gaming!!
I want to thank Budfred and the others for your assistance. At least I was able to clean up my system and avert future issues. Can anyone explain why this may have caused a problem like it did?

It can be tricky properly seating video cards and I am guessing that was the problem... It was probably working just enough, but reseating it got it working properly... Glad it is working...
Here is my prevention speech to help avoid future infection:
This is a good time to set up protection against further attacks. Read the article linked below about "How did I
get infected". You need an antivirus that is updated, a good firewall (a router firewall is not enough) and a
spyware blocker like SpywareBlaster and also IE-Spyads. All of these have good free versions available... be very
cautious about any security software that advertises in popups or other intrusive ways, they are not only usually
useless, but also often have malware in them....
