Hi I hope someone can help me. I have windows xp and had my computer built for me. My sound has always worked and now nothing. i checked my computer info and it said My sound card manufacturer is Realtek, Model Realtek AC97 Audio, Driver alcxwdm.sys Tuesday Jan 31,2006 Supported. Then I went to DirectX Diagnostic Tool and tested the sound and could hear nothing and under notes it says : Direct Sound test results: Failure at step 19 (user verification of software): HRESULT=0x00000000(error code). I redownloaded Realtek AC97 and still nothing. I have tried two different speaker systems and still nothing. I am so fustrated. If anyone can help please give me step by step instructions since I have problems understanding complicated answers. Is it possible I need a new sound card. I just bought this computer over 2 years ago. Thanks Rae:)

Did you uninstall the original audio driver before installing the new driver?
If your system was made by Dell, etc., than did you d/l the audio driver from their site?
If the system is a custom build, then did you d/l the audio driver from the MB manuf's site?

I have just experienced the same problem. I'm desperatly trying to solve it my self. i am running a Fujitsu Siemens Scaleo P computer with XP. I am unsure which sound card i have but do know its a Realtek.
I Have also noticed that when i try to play music Via Windows Media it will fail to find the file and other media plays come up with a file sayind no PCI card installed.
Is this the same as yours?

I Have just found the answer to this problem....
The reason this happens is due to a Window Update called something like "Realtek Sound Update" if you unistall this update restart your PC then reinstall the update it should work perfectly.
Let Me Know If There Are Any Problems......
