I've got a Desktop and Laptop, both of which came with recovery disks but no OS disks. Where can I get the disks without paying for the lisence?
I've started upgrading my own PC and next time might build my own, but I don't know how to get the OS without paying the full costs (I don't feel happy with pirating). Is there another lisence you can get when building your own PC? i.e. when buying with components?

hi,

your "Recovery Disks" if they are CD's have you operating system on them from the manufacturer.

They also will have all of the drivers for your particular system configuration.

additionally, you can purchase any operating system you desire.

You can buy full versions, and although you're supposed to only buy an OEM with the purchase of hardware, sometimes you can get it without hardware. But you don't get any support. Try: http://www.buycheapsoftware.com/ms_products.asp?subcategory=24

Kind of feel like you are over a barrel?

Well the license that comes with those restore disk is for the original hardware...you change things around enough so that the disk is no longer usable and you are supposed to buy a new OS (yeah, nice, huh?)...so it looks like you will need to plunk down the money for a new OS and you can buy the OEM version with hardware purchase...

Short of " pirating " , the only free OS out there for you to consider is Linux.

Good luck. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
