A file image.nrg, is a nero image file. To access the files in it, you need to copy it to the Hard Drive, then use nero to burn it to CD From Nero 5,open the File menu, and choose "Burn image". Then follow the prompts.

I don't know what I am doing wrong.
I have copied the image.nrg to my hard-disk
Opened up Nero burner
File/burn image/<navigate to saved file/<open>
A Window opens called "nero Wizard[burn CD]"
Now select the desired burning parameters:
There is three radio button
- Test (no actual burning) <this is greyed out>
- Test and burn <this is greyed out>
- burn
Burn is highlighted and the only option that is not greyed out.
<burn>
clicked on button burn
Then a window opens called "Save Image File"
File Name:
Save as type: <Image Files(.nrg), All files (*.*) >
This can't be right
I have used nero burner before - this never happened before
What am I doing wrong?

This idicates that your chosen recorder is a virtual device called "image recorder" and which needs to be changed to your real CD-burner. Image recorder is a virutal drive that saves nrg images as files.
The attached image is from Nero Express but it is similar under Nero Burning ROM as far as I remember.

you can always just mount the image using the builting software that Nero brings to mount the images, and then burn it as normal with any other program as a Disc Copy
