Hello, I'm not very educated in some of this computer terminology, so I've had a hard time following and knowing if this is an issue already out there.. However usually when I come across an issue, I search find the answer and it's done but this is something I haven't found anything on. First, I downloaded a anti-virus program which quarantined almost all of my .exe files. I couldn't remove them from there, I eventually uninstalled the program but it took those .exe files too.. Now I'm left with shortcuts but all I get is an error message or it can't find the files, and the biggest problem is I seem to keep having issues with installdriver.exe. I really haven't tried much yet, because I was dumb and didn't back up all of my pictures which of course the cd burner program won't work and I have quite a few... Can anyone tell me what the best way to fix this would be without losing all of my files?

Welcome to http://www.pcguide.com/ubb/pcgubb.gif forums.

Take a deep breath and don't panic. You should be able to save all of your data.

Please tell us:

What OS you are running.

What type of PC you have include all system specs.

The burning software you have/had

The AV software you installed and removed

The name of the virus you had.

installdriver.exe (http://fileinfo.prevx.com/QQ625416326271-INST64356/INSTALLDRIVER.EXE.html) would appear to be spyware.

Suggest you run HijackThis (http://www.pcguide.com/vb/showthread.php?t=30923) and post the results back here.

Which antivirus did you download and which operating system are you running.

PS
Obviously a similar line to classicsoftware.

Well the program I had was Norton Anti-Virus 2006, I'm using a compaq presario sr1130nx desktop using windows xp. was using recordnow! but I'm also having a similar problem as another post here trying to use nero 5 where i can only burn an image but recordnow! won't even open.. I'm not sure what virus it was, I never saw anything come up. Thanks hope this is what you need. I'll also try to attach a pic

Well it's running pretty smooth, this computer has been terrible since I bought it but that's another post.. The few things I'm still able to use will come up fine but I'm still having the same errors come up when trying to install any new programs or open existing files.

At this point I would run a local virus scan and an on-line virus scan. Once they come up clean, I would get your windows CD and perform a repair installation.

Ok thanks, so any suggestions on virus scans i should use? And so will a repair keep the files I have now?

Housecall (http://housecall.trendmicro.com/) or F-Secure (http://support.f-secure.com/enu/home/ols.shtml)

As far as data, yes. The virus damaged parts of Windows that are causing your problems will be replaced. If the files are from a different program, the program may have to be reinstalled.
