Speakers not loud enough

i recently purchased a new computer with windows xp.
attached some old polk audio speakers that were working on my other computer.

there is sound but is is very low.

i clicked on the speaker on the tool bar to make sure it wasn't muted anywhere and turned up the sound as loud as it would go.

i have also gone into sounds speech and audio devices to make sure nothing was muted there.

I am puzzled because there is sound, only it is very low.

Any ideas?:confused:

Do these speakers [stereo or what?] have their own built-in amplifier?

Are they connected to the "Line Out" [for amplified speakers] or "Speaker" [for unamplified speakers] output on the sound card?

Have you tried...
Connect the [stereo jack plug] to the [stereo] "Speaker" output socket on an optical drive and then play a CD?
