I'm thinking of overclocking my card but I've heard that it can be a bad thing.

Please explain.

Overclocking ALWAYS has a degree of risk associated with it. Basically you're attempting to drive your components harder than they were designed to run, like putting a supercharger on a yugo.

This can easily lead to permanent destruction of something, and will always void your warranty. Only attempt it if you are willing to ruin something. It's a workaround for people with very low financial resources, or those seeking "street cred"

If you can afford to upgrade your equipment, that is a vastly better way to go.
