About the only thing "bad" about Sat. broadband is that some of those connections also use a phone line. So the Sat connection is for downloading and the phone line is for uploading. (just something to watch out for)

Never dealt with Starband ,so I can't say how good or bad their connections are.

From what i've read the new starband sys has both download[upward of700k]and upload [56k to 100k/not good for gaming due to mil sec. delay] but before i spend mega $ i just wanted to check all opp./ i could build a new system for what it costs.

Hmmmmmm...there aren't many other cheap broadband options. Outside of Sat/DSL/Cable everything else is just different ( and more expensive) types of ISDN services.

Starband is must more expensive than direcpc aka as hughes satellite. The equipment cost me $ 179(direcpc) and service costs around 40 to 60 dollars a month. Satellites have a known latency problem due to the fact that the satellites signal travels 22,000 miles to the satellite. Also satellites have fair access policy that limits your download speeds after about 150MB. After 150MB the satellites server drops your download speeds to 56k modem speeed.

The other satellite that uses no modem to dial up is must more expensive(direcpc). Its called satellite return and upload speeds are much faster and download speeds are fast to. The equipment runs about 699 bucks, Yeah i know. Service is about 50 to 60 dollars a month.

I have the dial up modem satellite and average around 1500 to 2000 kps downstream and 56k modem upload speeds. I am happy with it but i first i was very disappointed, but once i learned its weaknesses i could not return to 56k.
