I'd like to put a stereo system but I don't know how to connect it.
Do I use the red/white cords? If so, what will I have to buy for my computer? Is there another way? The stereo system doesn't have any line in/out ports or anything of that sort (except headphone jack).
To connect it you need a stereo with a line-in.

I really can't tell the different between all of the line stuff..... and if I don't have one, can I buy a line-in?

Is it 2.1 or 5.1?

I don't recall ever seeing an audio system that had no input sockets of any kind.
Have you looked round the back of the unit?
No phono or jack input connections?
Is this an all-in-one unit or what?
What do you play though the stereo system and how do you connect that [whatever it is]?
Give us some info to go on. :)

I don't recall ever seeing an audio system that had no input sockets of any kind.I'm with ya there Sylvander...I've only witnessed no inputs on either some older or el-cheapo systems.
In today's MP3 economy, even car stereo systems are coming equipped with inputs...
We definitely need some additional information to be able to help you out...
I've seen plenty of systems that have had the wrong kind of inputs...mic not line-in or phono not tape, tape-no phono, etc...yeah go back that far...the important thing is that it needs to be a line-in input.

It can be labeled aux (auxiliary) or Tape-in also which are a line voltage inputs.

Probably that the original poster has a Boombox/ghettoblaster or some kind of mini system with all the composants integrated in one piece...with no inputs at all...
you need at least a stereo receiver or even an old cassette ghetto with cd line-in to plug-in your sound card output :)

I have the red/white jacks, that's about all. And a headphone jack.

On what? What is it labeled as? What are the options on the stereo for playing cd, radio, auxiliary, etc?
Make, model of pc AND stereo PLEASE! We're not mind readers nor clairvoyants!
Red and white jacks could be either input or output, but they are usually labeled as to what they are (in or out)...red is right channel, white is left.

Make, model of pc AND stereo PLEASE! We're not mind readers nor clairvoyants!Speak for yourself Fruss! I'll have you know that I've been referred to by some very bright and astute folks as, and I quote, "A know it all!" Thank you very much! :p
Wait, maybe it wasn't quite like that... I think it was more of a rhetorical question they fired at me..."You think you know it all don't you?!"

The stereo has the red and white jacks from the TV and such. The PC has basic stuff like the line in line out orange, light blue, light green, black, stuff that's a different size than the stereo.

The RED/WHITE jacks on the back are almost certainly an AUXILARY LINE INPUT of some sort (which is what you need). Think about it, why would you have a line out of an all-in-one system? That sort of thing is reserved for pro audio applications/gear
Do you have a button on the front of the stereo that is labeled AUX or maybe INPUT or GAME, something that would corespond to an external audio source? That's a dead giveaway there too.
You'll need a cable that goes from 1/8" stereo male jack, to RCA (red/white) jacks. I've seen them at best buy, circuit city, walmart... they're cheapest from ebay, here's one for reference...

You'll want to connect that to the light green "line out" audio jack on your computer. That should do it. Make sure you adjust your volumes on the stereo and computer sound controller if at first you done hear anything... and make sure you press that INPUT or AUX button or whatever to tell it where the audio is coming from.

Make sure you adjust your volumes on the stereo and computer sound controller if at first you done hear anything... You may need to enable a device in Audio Properties or unmute depending on the source in the PC
