Greetings, PCG correspondents & moderators ....

My HP Paviliion zx5000 loading of websites, via AOL, seems a bit slow. I defraged and did an AdAware scan (flushed the Temp Internet Files first; nothing was reported as needing removal ...). I then ran Hijack This. This is the resulting log:

The only thing I spot (not that I actually know enough to spot much of anything ...) that 'raised a red flag' for me is:
O23 - Service: Ati HotKey Poller - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\system32\Ati2evxx.exe

Here's the scoop on that ... I finally decided to 'upgrade' to cable net access (via Atlantic Broadband), and this HPPavilionzx5000 NB seemed to speed up considerably. The improved downloading of websites persuaded me to install the 'latest' version of Google Earth. While GE seems to load quickly, when I begin a search, the PC 'freezes'; only a 'hard boot' will restore any function. I've done the suggested update of this PC's graphics card, an ATI product. That has not had the desired effect of preventing the 'freeze' with use of GE. A 'chat' with a techie from HP ended with their recommendation that I add memory to my notebook, with a purchase of an additional memory card (I've not yet done that ...).

I've not tried GE again, although I've also not deleted it from my PC. I am still trying to find out if removing some of the programmes that I never use, that seem to require a considerable amount of memory, will 'free up' RAM for the GE programme. For instance, I have:
MICROSOFT Money 2004, and it's System Pack, with 241.25 mb
" " Office Standard Edition 2003, with 428.00 mb
" " Works 7, with 203 mb

Will removing these give GE the system resourses it needs? Or do these programmes only have an effective drain on resourses when they're 'opened'. (Do they open 'on impact', as soon as I start upvia 'windows xp'?)

Is the ATI Hotkey Poller the likely culprit, in the slow website loading via AOL, or is it the AOL programme, itself, slowing things down?

Thanks in advance for any review and suggestions on the HJT log and the sluggish webpage loading.

Greetings, and Good Morning, PCGuide,

Just wondering if it would be possible for one of the HJT experts to take a look at this log, and comment. The webpage loading has improved, without any specific intervention on my part, but I'd still appreciate knowing if there is anything that raises a red flag, in the HJT log posted above.

Thanks in advance for any review and advice.

This is the only thing I see that might be a problem... You can fix it with HJT and, if it is needed, it will be reinstalled when needed...

Open a HJT scan and put a check by:

O16 - DPF: {BCBC9371-595D-11D4-A96D-00105A1CEF6C} (View22RTE Class) - http://66.242.36.116/view22/View22RTE.cab

Close all open windows except HJT and press Fix checked...

Reboot and post a fresh log... Please just use plain formatting, it is easier to read...

As per your instructions, BudFred, I closed all open windows and programmes, ('flushed' the temp. 'net files and cookies), then ran a scan, checked the noted item, then ran the fix. Here's the new scan:

Sorry for making the posts more difficult for you to read, BudFred -- I wear contacts for distance, which makes it difficult for me to read arial in a small type unless I can find my 'DollarStore' reading glasses ... so, I usually use book antiqua , often in blue, in a large size for my comments, and leave the arial small for the HJT logs. It's easier, of course, to just use the default arial, than to remember to add and close the tags, etc., so I'll remember that it is preferred to just use the default.

Just was was 'View22RTE class'?

The retrieval of webpages had improved, over the past few days -- I suppose I should stop using AOL as my browser, and just use the IE programme, now that I've got the cable hookup, instead of dial up. Old habits (and laziness) are my only excuses ...

Thanks in advance for your review of the new log, Budfred, and for your advice and recommendations.

Budfred

I closed all open windows and programmes, ('flushed' the temp. 'net files and cookies)Actually, that is quite a bit more than I said to do... When you closed all programs, I hope you didn't close your antivirus and firewall??

Sorry for making the posts more difficult for you to read, BudFred -- I wear contacts for distance, which makes it difficult for me to read arial in a small type unless I can find my 'DollarStore' reading glasses ... so, I usually use book antiqua , often in blue, in a large size for my comments, and leave the arial small for the HJT logs. It's easier, of course, to just use the default arial, than to remember to add and close the tags, etc., so I'll remember that it is preferred to just use the default. The larger size is fine, it is mostly the color that makes it harder for me to read...

Just was was 'View22RTE class'?I wasn't able to find a clear answer to that question which is why I said to fix it... I saw it fixed in another log, but the main thing is that it should be fairly easy to identify it if it is legit... And, as I said, if it is needed, it will be reinstalled when you visit the site in question...

There is one other O16 that I have had some difficulty identifying, but I think it is okay... If you want to, you can fix it...

O16 - DPF: {200B3EE9-7242-4EFD-B1E4-D97EE825BA53} (VerifyGMN Class) - http://h20270.www2.hp.com/ediags/gmn...taller_gmn.cab

If you want to check a little deeper, try these:

1. Download this file - combofix.exe (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/combofix.exe)
2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
3. When finished, it will produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall...

and...

* Download Dr.Web CureIt to the desktop:
ftp://ftp.drweb.com/pub/drweb/cureit/drweb-cureit.exe

Doubleclick the drweb-cureit.exe file and Allow to run the express scan
This will scan the files currently running in memory and when something is found, click the yes button when it asks you if you want to cure it. This is only a short scan.
Once the short scan has finished, mark the drives that you want to scan.
Select all drives. A red dot shows which drives have been chosen.
Click the green arrow at the right, and the scan will start.
Click 'Yes to all' if it asks if you want to cure/move the file.
When the scan has finished, look if you can click next icon next to the files found: http://users.telenet.be/bluepatchy/miekiemoes/images/check.gif
If so, click it and then click the next icon right below and select Move incurable as you'll see in next image:
http://users.telenet.be/bluepatchy/miekiemoes/images/move.gif
This will move it to the %userprofile%\DoctorWeb\quarantaine-folder if it can't be cured. (this in case if we need samples)
After selecting, in the Dr.Web CureIt menu on top, click file and choose save report list
Save the report to your desktop. The report will be called DrWeb.csv
Close Dr.Web Cureit.
Reboot your computer!! Because it could be possible that files in use will be moved/deleted during reboot.
After reboot, post the contents of the log from Dr.Web you saved previously in your next reply.

When you closed all programs, I hope you didn't close your antivirus and firewall??
Ah, no .... sigh. I don't always 'say' what I mean ... a woman's perogative, no? (Actually, when I don't say what I mean, it's almost always because I don't know what I'm talking about .... rotf, lmho ....) Anyway, I'm pretty sure I didn't close all programmes -- I thought the first part of the HJT log supported the idea at at least some 40-odd processes were still 'up and running'? Amongst others, McAfee is shown in HJT's 'running processes' part of the log -- I'm hoping this means that, although I didn't have McAfee's programme 'open' via 'Windows', it was still on, and thus protecting this laptop. And, I think Windows XP itself has a firewall, in its 'Security Center', no? To the best of my recollection, I didn't do anything to change its settings from 'on' to 'off', or do anything to disable McAfee. I hope not, anyway ... sigh.

I did Google the hp entry, and found this information, via http://www.spyware-browser.com/items/-/17782/

Name / Raw Class: hpobjinstaller_gmn.dll / Safe
MD5: 39278fe196b870c7840695e894759e38
Category: Browser Monitor / ActiveX
ID / Size / Date: #17782 / 655.6 KB / 2006-02-15
Version / Publisher: 1.0.0.11 / Hewlett-Packard, Hewlett-Packard Company
Description / Remarks: Object Delivery for Web. VerifyGMN Class
http://h20270.www2.hp.com/ediags/gmn/install/hpobjinstaller_gmn.cab
Detailed Classification: Good application / Hewlett-Packard

I'm hoping this means that the item is okay.

As to digging deeper, well, I often feel like I'm already in too deep ... lol. And speaking of deep, the stalls are up to my ankles in horse poo, so I'd best get off this pc, and get to the poo pitching, before the rain starts. Thanks again, BudFred, for reviewing the HJT log. I've added this post to my 'favourites' in my PCG folder, so if I find this notebook slowing down much, I'll print the combofix and Dr. Web instructions, and give them a go.

I Googled that HP item as well... However, I only trust certain sites to tell me if something is good or not... The pests who create rogue antispyware put up sites with false info in them and I do not trust them for that reason... I don't know if the site you listed is legit or not, so I don't trust it... You can keep that entry if you would like, but again, it will be restored if you revisit the site in question, so it may be safer to fix it...

The Windows firewall is generally not considered to be adequate and I suggest getting a stronger one...

Here is my prevention speech to help avoid future infection:

This is a good time to set up protection against further attacks. Read the article linked below about "How did I
get infected". You need an antivirus that is updated, a good firewall (a router firewall is not enough) and a
spyware blocker like SpywareBlaster and also IE-Spyads. All of these have good free versions available... be very
cautious about any security software that advertises in popups or other intrusive ways, they are not only usually
useless, but also often have malware in them....
