History: I run Outlook 2000--last week my HUGE .pst file was corrupt and could not be opened. since it went over 2gb, I felt that the file size was too big and have attempted to chop it and use the inbox repair tool and them import it, to no avail. I used the microsoft oversize pst/ost file utility and that also did not help. I would like to be able to recover this file, as it is very important to me!

I have been using McAfee Security Suite which hasn't detected any bugs. At the recommendation of a friend, I downloaded AVG which located a virus in a file called kernels8.exe and put it in the virus vault. I proceeded to do some research to see what to do next, and came upon this site. I attempted to view my task mgr but received the message that Task Manager has been disabled by my administrator.

I think I saw that another poster was told to put hijack this in a permanent file but I am not sure how to do this--any help anyone can offer would be greatly appreciated!

I have located some information about how to get rid of this file and these problems, but wanted to see if anyone here has anything to offer! Please Help!

To move HJT to a permanent folder, please open Right click on the zipped copy and choose Extract... It should offer you the option of creating a new folder and do so, giving it a name you will remember like C:\HJT... Extract to that folder and then run it from there...

Open an HJT scan and put a check by...

O23 - Service: SSDP Discovery Service Locator (ssdpdb) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\system32\ssdpdb.exe (file missing)

Close all open windows except HJT and press Fix checked...

Go to Start - Run and copy/paste this into Run:

sc delete ssdpdb

Press Enter...

Use Windows Search to find this file and delete it if it is found... Use Advanced options under "All files and folders" to search hidden and system folders... Let me know if you found it...

You appear to have both McAfee and AVG running in resident mode and that means they are likely to conflict and mess up your system... I suggest that you disable one of them immediately so that it is not resident... You can keep it, but only run it for scanning...

Reboot and post a fresh HJT log... Please let me know how things are going with your system... Please do not put text in between if you need 2 post for the log...

OK--I posted the new log above after doing as you suggested. Disabled McAfee, moved HJT, deleted file from HJT log as indicated, ssdpdb file deleted from start-run and windows search.

Ran ewido, found questionable heuristics file, uploaded it to jotti and found the following:
AntiVir found heuristic/malware (probable variant)
Avast found win32:sdbot-gen22
BitDefender found trojan.hacktool.ppiew.a
Dr. Web found dloader.irc.trojan (probable variant)
F-Prot Antivirus found possible a new variant of W32/IRCBot-based!Maximus
Kaspersky found backdoor.win32.geweb.f
VBA found Backdoor.xBot.1 (probable variant)

Others found nothing.

Computer is very very slow, internet is very very slow. My Task Manager is disabled by the "administrator". What to try next?

It appears that I missed this... Unless you somehow actually installed Hotbar, I suggest you fix this with HJT:

You are still running HJT from a zipped file and you really need to move it to a permanent folder... As it is, backups are not available for what you have fixed so far...

I uninstalled McAfee, extracted HJT and I think it is in a permanent file now. Above is the new log after deleting hotbar. is what I got.

WinTasks is probably responsible for disabling the task mgr. I was infected with downloader.tibs several days ago and learned that a disabled task manager is a symptom of dl.tibs and so I was thinking it hadn't been fully removed. As I have continued to research what to do, I found the other virus as mentioned in my previous message, then quarantined it. Maybe everything is OK now. What do you think about the Outlook file--is there any hope for recovery of this file in a usable format?

I tried to run the combofix.exe, and it downloaded something, ran it, had a black DOS screen, then a blue screen, then a black DOS screen again. No text in any screen, no log. I tried it three times......?

Yes, HJT is in a permanent folder now...

Try ComboFix in Safe Mode... If it still doesn't work, try this:

* Click here (http://support.f-secure.com/enu/home/ols3.shtml) to use the F-Secure Online Scanner
It's explained there with images how to allow the ActiveX to start the scan, so read that first.
Then click the F-Secure Online Scanner Next Generation Beta link.
Once the ActiveX is installed, you should accept the License terms by clicking OK below to start the scan.
Click the Full System Scan button.
It will start to download scanner components and databases. This can take a while.
The main scan will start.
Once the scan finished scanning, click the Automatic cleaning (recommended) button
It could be possible that your firewall gives an alert - allow it, because that's a connection you establish to submit infected files to F-Secure.
The cleaning can take a while, so please be patient.
Then click the Show report button and copy and paste what's present under results in your next reply.
