I recently got a Windows remote control & receiver
(http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16880100851) which I
would like to use with my XP home installation. I have read that this is
possible, using "Got all Media" (http://www.gallm.com/). However, I can't
seem to get the remote's driver online. With the transceiver plugged into a
USB port, XP finds the new hardware, but it fails to obtain the driver
online. Also won't do so if I try via device manager. This is a newly
built pc, I also have Vista 64 installed on another hdd. I haven't gone
through all the setup there yet, but Vista does recognize & respond to the
remote. I don't know though when (IF) I will be buying Vista once the beta
expires, & I really would like to be able to use the remote with XP home.
Looked on the MS site for the remote driver, all I can find is info saying
the "driver will be automatically dl'd & installed", not the driver itself
which I can dl & install manually. I have the pc connected to a TV in
another room, my main concern is being able to control dl'd video files on
the pc from the other room (start, pause, fwd, rew), using a set of remote
extenders I have (http://www.skyvision.com/store/mi7500055.html). Not so
interested in the "tivo" aspect right now. Anyone know how I can get the
remote drivers, or otherwise use this remote with XP home?

TIA

Have you looked at the manufacturer's website?

I find, that more often than not, Windows driver database is not the way to go. It often has old or outdated drivers or a version that enables only basic functions and not the full capabilities of the device in question. In other words...it sucks.

Generally, the device manufacturer is the one to supply the best/latest driver, followed by motherboard (if the drivers are motherboard drivers) then machine manufacturer (if it is a major brand)...Windows drivers are well bellow the bottom rung on my list.
