You have at least two choices for cables in Ethernet:
Crossover
Patch
Which one are you using?
Are you seeing any errors in Device Manager?
Possible bad NIC card?

Welcome to the PC Guide forums.
Is the NIC onboard or a PCI card?
If it's a PCI card make sure it is seated properly. You may have bumped it when swapping out the hard drive.
Are you sure you installed the correct driver? Look in device manager to see if there are any question marks or exclamation marks.
Check the cable to make sure it's plugged in properly. Look at the back of the NIC, do you get a amber or green light when plugged into the live network?

HI, the NIC is onboard!
I installed the correct driver, there are no exclamation marks next to it in device manager. I don't get any light when the cable is plugged in.

I take it that the NIC was working fine before you installed the new HDD?
Try a known good cable.
Uninstall it in device manager, reboot and let windows find it again. You will of course have to install the drivers again.

Just another thought, but did you install your mobo drivers (they should include your NIC drivers) after installing XP? It shouldn't really make a difference with the NIC (although they should be installed anyway), but without the mobo drivers installed who knows, computers will do some funny things sometimes.
