This might not be the "approved method" but it worked for me> open your PC case and somewhere in there you will see a little speaker the size of a pin pong ball, unplug the little devil, no sound form inside your puter, just what you have on the external speakers..Yall gotta excuse me for my backwoods ways but i am from TN LOL...
The correct way to silence your modem speaker is using the correct AT command to quiet the speaker.
In the modem settings just add the additional command . Remember that all commands in AT commands are CAP’s
ATHO is not the same as AthO ,, ( ATHO Hangs up the modem.)
ATLx is for volume
ATMx is for speaker control
You will need to check the modem doc’s for the exact AT command to use to disable the speaker all together.
By default Most are ON till connected.

Go to Start\Settings\Control Panel and double click Modems. Highlight the modem and click Properties below. You'll see a slider for modem volume. Pull it all the way to the left and it should shut up.

Some day I should learn to NOT assume things.
Pete is correct.
In the off chance that you have one of those Modems Like I have.
The Speaker (Volume) slide described by Pete will Not silence your modem handshake.
Then you should find and use the Correct AT command to turn the speaker off.

And here is yet another option http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/tongue.gif
If you have it available, Dbl click the speaker icon in your system tray. Click "Options", Properties, Playback radio button, then scroll thru the list at the bottom. See if you have "Phone" in there and put a check in the box. You can then adjust the volume as you like, including "Mute."
Good luck http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/cool.gif

Someone who frequents this Forum.... I won't mention who it
is.... has the neatest fix of all. Hehehe.
Find some tape and proceed to tape the speaker over until
you can't hear that crazy sound.
Here's what worked for me. In Extra Settings type in M0. (0 is zero)=
no speaker noise.
