View Full Version : Need help with a trojan

Hello all. Been a while since I posted last. Took a little break, got addicted to WoW, had a baby, and now I need a litle help!

Lately my av (pc-cillin 2006) real-time scanner has been picking up a trojan every few seconds. Additionally, every couple of minutes or so IE will pop up with nothing on it. Just a blank page.

The trojan that my av calls out is TROJ_AGENT.GIU
It points to the file C:\WINDOWS\System\vbav.dll, which doesn't exist. Or at least I can't see it.

TM says that it's low risk, but it's irritating as all hell. Anyone have any ideas on how to get rid of it?

Oh btw, ad-aware and spybot don't seem to have any affect.

Thanks!

Budfred

Post a HijackThis log so we can get a better idea of what is going on...

http://www.merijn.org/programs.php

To run HJT, extract it to a permanent folder such as one you create like C:\HJT or the Desktop. Close all open windows and
browsers and make sure that all programs are enabled if you use msconfig. Run it and Scan, then Save the log.
When the log window appears, Right click to Copy it, open your browser and come here to Paste the entire log. Do
not make any changes until it is checked since most items are either benign or essential to the computer.

I only closed what was visible. There are probably a number of small apps running in the background that I never think about, so if you need me to redo the scan let me know.

Thanks for the help Budfred!

Please download VundoFix.exe (http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=4)
to your desktop.
Double-click *VundoFix.exe* to run it.
Click the *Scan for Vundo* button.
Once it's done scanning, click the *Remove Vundo* button.
You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click *YES*
Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click *OK*.
Please post the contents of C:\*vundofix.txt* and a new HiJackThis log.

Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove.
In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above
instructions starting from "Click the *Scan for Vundo* button." when
VundoFix appears at reboot.

Please open a HJT scan and put checks by:

Close all open windows except HJT and press Fix checked... (you only need to be concerned about open windows, don't worry about programs running in background like your antivirus and firewall)...

Reboot and post a fresh HJT log along with the VundoFix log... Report back on how things are going...

Did as instructed. VundoFix didn't find anything at all. Ran HJT and fixed suggested entries. No change in performance. Real time av still finds the same thing every few seconds, and it's finding some additional things that I can never see because they pass by too fast.

Current HJT log is as follows.

For some reason, I see a system restore in my future...

EDIT: I did check fix for the entry "O20 - Winlogon Notify: vbav - C:\WINDOWS\system\vbav.dll". It just keeps coming back.

If System Restore would work, it would be worthwhile to do, but it is likely that your Restore Points are also infected...

See if you can find and delete this file:

C:\WINDOWS\system\vbav.dll

You will probably need to set Windows to show hidden and system files to find it...

In Windows XP, on the taskbar, click Start > My Computer.
In Windows Me/2000/XP, on the Tools menu, click Folder Options.
On the View tab, uncheck Hide file extensions for known file types.
In Windows Me/2000/XP, uncheck Hide protected operating system files. Then, under the "Hidden files" folder, click Show hidden files and folders.
If you see a warning message, click Yes.
Click Apply.
Click OK.

You can also try Windows Search and select the Advanced options for "All files and folders" to search in hidden and system folders...

If you can find and kill it, please run HJT again and try to fix the O20...

Then...

1. Download this file - combofix.exe (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/combofix.exe)
2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
3. When finished, it will produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall...

Then reboot and post a fresh HJT log and the ComboFix log with an update on how it is going...

Okay, I tried numerous times to delete the vbav file with no luck. It always says that it's being used by another person or program. I've even tried restarting in safe mode to no avail.

I ran combofix, and the following is the log. I don't know if it's supposed to happen or not, but when I ran it, I got a rundll error and the machine promptly restarted. However the log file was there when it did restart.

As far as a system restore goes, I wouldn't use the windows restore points anyway. I'd do a complete format/install. And by the looks of things, it's going to be necessary. Probably not a bad idea anyway.

If you wish to reformat, please tell me that before we go through this process... it takes a long time to analyze these logs and come up with fixes - I would rather not waste time with it if you are just going to end up reformatting... For now, please do this:

1. Please download The Avenger (http://swandog46.geekstogo.com/avenger.zip) by Swandog46 to your Desktop. Click on Avenger.zip to open the file Extract avenger.exe to your desktop

2. Copy all the text contained in the code box below to your Clipboard:

Files to delete:

C:\WINDOWS\system\vbav.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\oncjwtsp.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\aavrwqcr.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\kccvxwok.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\ttciofhq.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\ootcxkkn.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\jvweexom.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\vucfoqhd.dll
C:\WINDOWS\ab_02.exe
C:\WINDOWS\TIELT001.exe
C:\WINDOWS\octeltpop.exe
C:\WINDOWS\hancerdoem.exe
C:\WINDOWS\Setup90.exe
C:\WINDOWS\MirarSetup_876057.exe
C:\Documents and Settings\Jer\Application Data\61DB724071FD4BEB97830E83C689E251.sta
C:\Documents and Settings\Jer\Application Data\61DB724071FD4BEB97830E83C689E251.rul

Note: the above code was created specifically for this user. If you are not this user, do NOT follow these directions as they could damage the workings of your system.

3. Now, start The Avenger program by clicking on its icon on your desktop. Under "Script file to execute" choose "Input Script Manually". Now click on the Magnifying Glass icon which will open a new window titled "View/edit script" Paste the text copied to clipboard into this window Click Done Now click on the Green Light to begin execution of the script Answer "Yes" twice when prompted.

4. The Avenger will automatically do the following: Restart your computer. ( In cases where the code to execute contains "Drivers to Unload", The Avenger will actually restart your system twice.) On reboot, briefly open a black command window on your desktop, this is normal. After the restart, create a log file that should open with the results of Avenger’s actions. This log file will be located at C:\avenger.txt The Avenger will also have backed up all the files, etc., that you asked it to delete, and will have zipped them and moved the zip archives to C:\avenger\backup.zip.

5. Please copy/paste the content of avenger.txt into your reply along with a fresh HJT log by using Add/Reply

Thanks!

Any Luck???? I am getting the same message and it is driving me krazy.

mittal8,

If you want help, please start your own thread in Applications and Security... It would be a good idea to post a HijackThis log as well...

It worked!! Or at least so far it has worked. I can actually turn on my real-time av without getting a message every two seconds, and I haven't seen IE pop up randomly yet. Thanks, Budfred, you rule!

***EDIT***
I just noticed I hadn't fixed the 020 with HJT, so I went ahead and did it. It is finally gone from the log, but if you'd like me to post it again anyway, I can.

Actually, there are still a few things to clean up... Hopefully they will go without a struggle...

Open a HJT scan and put checks by:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {0676CC61-CDC5-447e-AAFC-9D886EC820EB} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\oncjwtsp.dll (file missing)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {871A54C1-1EB3-48bd-A879-5DBA4EF16BE6} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\kccvxwok.dll (file missing)
O20 - Winlogon Notify: vbav - C:\WINDOWS\system\vbav.dll (file missing)

Close all open windows except HJT and press Fix checked...

Reboot and post a fresh log....
