Just get a decent home router, (Linksys or Netgear) plug your broadband connection to the router, plug an Ethernet cable to the router from each PC.
Power up the broadband modem, then the router, then the PCs.

or if you dont want to do that, you could do it wirelessly(personally i use an Encore Wireless-G PCI ENLWI-G and a Linksys Wireless USB adapter) if you use that with the router, and if your router comes with a wireless usb adapter, such as in my case, just hook the router up to one computer, and set up the wireless adapter on the other computer. Instant Communication, and a cheaper price!

The error is a Windows bug when there is no router or server assigning an IP address. This happens to us all the time at LAN parties where there is only a switch and no router. The official Microsoft fix is HERE (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=17d997d2-5034-4bbb-b74d-ad8430a1f7c8&DisplayLang=en). That should solve the problem.
I would, however, recommend that you do purchase a router. It also makes it easier if you ever decide to add a third computer, and eliminates the need for crossover cables, etc.

Ok, you can do what i said (Cheapest Working Alternative) which in my oppinion works great. All you have to do is install the Program/Drivers for your Wireless USB device and it should work on its own if the router is set up
