I want to make a fresh installation of Windows XP (not an upgrade) but I've got files that are too big to backup easily. Can I put them in a second partition, install Windows XP then copy them onto the first partition and delete the second partition?

Yes you can. If you already have the partition established, then it is that easy. If not, you will need a prog like Partition Magic. You can create a partition from un-used space on a single partition hdd.
Depending on what file system these files where created on will determine what file system you will have to use with XP (FAT32, NTFS).
