Hello diurnal,
I've just started using Time Warner/Road Runner cable here in Indy. Must say I'm very happy. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
Been trying to pin them down on some average speeds to expect, but they just give me the run around. Who cares its much faster!
Went to PC Pitsop to run the bandwith tests. Here is what their results said:
Download avg: 1778Kb/s
Upload avg: 367Kb/s
$45.00 monthly and worth cigarette I gave up to afford it.

Hey Diurnal, I've got a cable modem and I don't know what the speeds are, but I know it's real, real fast. I had a 56k, but for reasons I won't go into, I got the cable modem. I don't remember all the stuff that I checked out, but it actually ended up being a little cheaper than two phone lines. So if you're trying to justify the cost, DO IT!

Cheaper than two phone lines.... didn't think about that! Going to go get a pack of smokes. I'll call the Phone company tomorrow and cancle second line! LOL
NOT! 42 days and counting going to make it this time! LOL

P.S.:Sorry for the off topic post Diurnal, couldn't help sharing the humor!

Comcast {formally @home }
Upload= average of 90-120KB's per sec Download= { depending on the server i'm connected too & the hops between us } min=12KB to a Max of 1.3 MB's per sec.
Just remember that it's not just your connection that counts, many factors are involved in your internet connection-but by far i'd have to say that only Cable lives up to it's public broadband advertisements.

Cox
3041 kbps download
297 kbps upload
That's as of right now here at work. We use the residential loop to the headend and from there we're on Cox's business network. This was the old @work network which we pay about $700.00 a month (we get 4 public IPs as well) But I'm thinking of switching to another one of their business networks (if the price is right) where we'll get 2Mb up and 2Mb down.
But right now most of the time the download speed is in the upper 2000 kbps range. Upload is always 290kbps or so.
Here's a good place to test your speed :
http://www.dslreports.com/stest?loc=2
You'll need to enable "JAVA" to run the test.
EDIT Just noticed that rond36 has the same link posted. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

Nice link. AT&T Broadband cable, 989 down, 291 up. 18 times faster than 56k. It's billed on my cable TV bill so I guess I can just half it, so about $42.50.

AT&T Broadband ( formerly Mediaone) peak time where I am but...
300 down
80 up
Seems to me that my connection has slowed gradually over time...when I first sign up with Media One 2 years ago( I don't remember the numbers ) but it was lightning fast.
I guess it's time call and find out what's going on http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/frown.gif

One thing I'd like to know comparing dsl and cable is the the latency which is real important playing games on line. I know on my dsl the latency is always very low.

Yeah i heard DSL is better for gaming on line. Rond thats a pretty awesome connection you got , the same ul and dl.
Never heard of SDSL, but i heard of VDSL , which is like t3 speeds.

Actually from my experiances in online gaming { only kind i do nowadays }, those with DSL of any kind are usually higher than me, but still less than dial up-here again it depends on you distance and the quality of lines between you and the server.
So far with cable i'm usually pinging at <100 on most serves in any given game, whereas my good friend is usually at <200 with his ADSL connection.

Of course the most important factor is your provider and dsl and cable are far better than dailup. I play online quite a bit and hear cable guys complaining about "the cable tonight" and no one complaining about "the dsl tonight".
This article seems pretty good at summing things up.

I know it doesn't help much right now, just something to look forword to.
Network Access Speeds
The Teledesic Network will use a constellation of non-geostationary satellites to provide global access to a wide range of data, voice and video communication capabilities. A variety of user terminals accommodate "on-demand" single channel rates from 128 kbps up to 100 Mbps on the uplink and up to 720 Mbps on the downlink.
This came from HERE (http://www.teledesic.com/about/about.htm) . It seems their "Technology" page is down right now, but while reading thru the other night, it talked about typical users being able to have a 64Mb/64Mb connection. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/eek.gif http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
I have been buggin them pretty good for more info and I was just notified that due to my interest, I will be on the list for Beta and other testing. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/cool.gif

I don't know if any of you fellas are familiar with Internet 1 (maybe iisob and diurnal) it is expensive as hell and it will be the new format from the T-lines, but Sandia National Laboraties and have a sort of an understanding about my cost, so i won't go into price, but your format is as follows:
Internet 1
up/l - 11,8973KB
d/ - 15,677KB
it went off the scale after that so i don't i don't its full potential, but there it is in writing....

Test running..........
** Speed 1837(down)/219(up) kbps **
(At least 36 times faster than a 56k modem)
Logged result.
Finish.
Cox Cable....ranges from 1400 to 3200 kbps and 200-275 up
$39.95 mo.
I'm kinda in the "boonies" here so I always get very high speeds [nobody else is on the node]. When we move to the city in May I bet the speeds will drop like a rock.
