View Full Version : CD writer for my 166 MHz??

Hi,

I have a perfectly good computer except that I need a CD writer for it. A couple of vendors have told me that my CPU isn't fast enough for any CD writer that I can buy now, so I want to post here, just to make sure.

I don't know much about CD writers, but can I not write at 1x or 2x even if the writer is rated at 24x or whatever? Also, I don't wish to copy from one CD to another- I will only be burning files from my hard disk. And I really don't care how long it takes- I won't even use it that often! I'm not looking for performance, as long as it works. I'd prefer a newer writer, though, so if I get a new system, I can transfer it over.

Okay, so here's my computer. I have 1 5 1/4" bay still open.

Acer Aspire
166 MHz AMD-k6 MMX
256kb pipeline burst L2 cache
power supply:100W switchable
13 GB hardrive
20x CD-ROM.

And I have 80 MB of EDO Ram, but I can go up to 125 MB if that will allow me to use a newer writer.

Thank you for helping me!

Sorry-

I do not have a 51/4" bay open. Above my CDROM, I have a 3 1/2" bay open.
But I don't mind replacing my current CDROM with the new CD writer.

Thanx!

It will work, but if you try to burn faster than 2X you'll probably get coasters.

I use an older HP {8/4/32} on a PI at 133MHZ w/48MB's of SIMM's-works just fine as long as i hold it down to 2X and make sure nothing is running in the background.

If you look around you may be able to find an 8x or 10x unit (maybe even with Burn Proof) fairly cheaply...and like iisbob said, keep it down to 1x or 2x (you may, with BurnProof, be able to hit 4x, but I wouldn't try it with anything critical)
